FFmpeg Summer Of Code - MultimediaWiki
FFmpeg has been selected as one of the approved mentoring organizations.
While libavcodec -- the FFmpeg component that encodes and decodes audio and video data -- enjoys widespread use among an impressive array of multimedia projects libavformat has not seen the same level of adoption.
This Summer of Code project consists of updating the current ancient ffmpeg implementation to be in line with the current specification, and benchmark it against other implementations of NUT and other container formats.

 Converting Video Formats with FFmpeg
FFmpeg is a simple and straightforward application that allows Linux users to convert video files easily between a variety of different formats.
FFmpeg is an open-source audio and video converter that supports most industry-standard codecs and can convert from one file format to another quickly and easily.
FFmpeg uses the extension of the output file to try to determine the format and codec to use, though this can be overridden using command-line parameters (more on this later).

Converting video formats with ffmpeg by Suramya Tomar
ffmpeg uses the extension of the output file to try and determine the format and codec to use, though this can be overridden using command line parameters.
ffmpeg also has support for encoding audio files and the command to convert audio files is the same as the command to encode video files.
ffmpeg lets you choose the codec using which you want to encode by adding '-vcodec codec' to the command line, where codec is the name of the codec you want to use.

 Grafman's FFMPEG Developer Info
FFMPEG is a portable, opensource image/audio/video capture/conversion utility, supporting a large number of media formats/codecs.
FFMPEG will use the input/output file extentions to determine the media formats/codecs to use; this can be overridden by other parameters.
FFMPEG provides a streaming pipeline with a plugin interface (via shared libs) which supports the use of media filtering/effects.

FFmpeg on Mac OS X How-to
The FFmpeg developers try to make sure that the latest code in the Subversion repository compiles on all target systems, but because FFmpeg is under constant development, that is not always possible.
FFmpeg is a moving target, and this issue is resolved in the latest version of FFmpeg from the Subversion repository.
Although FFmpeg seems to work pretty well, it is common to run into roadblocks that may not be easy to overcome, because the error messages are not helpful.

ffmpeg can also do a few basic manipulations on the audio and video data just before it is re-encoded by the target codecs.
This recaps the options with which ffmpeg will be built, and if you look at the final lines that I've highlighted, it also gives instructions on how to grab the source code for the AMR codecs.
The (undocumented in the man page!) "-aq" option of ffmpeg is how you tell it what audio quality to ask of a VBR codec, and the numerical value you give is interpreted differently by different codecs.

As far as I know ffmpeg does not support VP6 and will not support it in the near future (as it is a proprietary codec).

Transcode_Wiki: FFmpeg Vs. Mpeg2enc   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-03)
However, the rate control code (as of FFmpeg 0.4.9b1 and 2005/1/1 CVS) has a design flaw that can cause it to exceed the maximum bitrate allowed during the second pass, which will show up as "SCR underflow" or similar errors when multiplexing the video.
FFmpeg's 2-pass processing gives it a clear advantage at 3000 kbps, but even at 9000 kbps the lower half of the left face comes out slightly better with 2-pass FFmpeg.
My personal experience is that ffmpeg runs around 3-4 times as fast as mpeg2enc per frame, but ffmpeg seems to always leave a little bit of visual noise hanging around, while mpeg2enc looks very clean if given enough bitrate.

 Using H.263 with OpenH323
The FFMPEG library used to implement the H.263 codec uses the Library (or Lesser) GPL license, which does not permit directly linking with non-GPL code unless the entire application is available as source code.
To comply with these terms, the FFMPEG library is not linked either statically or dynamically with OpenH323, but is loaded at run-time as a module under the explicit control of OpenH323.
To use H.263 with OpenH323, it is necessary to have compiled version of the ffmpeg library for your platform.

FFmpeg then encodes the input file without audio (the -an flag) at 300 kilobits/second, using the ISO MPEG-4 encoder to an AVI video file containing a single MPEG-4 video track.
Defining the sample rate of the input WAV file when decoded with ffmpeg might not be necessary, but if you have to, use -R 48000, not -r 48000 (because -r is a completely unrelated option only for testing purposes).

FFMPEG stores each image as an array of uint32_t, one element per pixel, whereas Blender stores them as unsigned char (8 bits), four elements per pixel.
FFMPEG has two major data structures: AVCodecContext (the handle to a audio/video stream's codec) and AVFormatContext (the handle to the file itself).
When you read a video file, FFMPEG sets both structs up for you, there is very little you have to do to get at the underlying data.

For this example, we’ll assume that you have a 1.85:1 ratio XviD AVI to convert, though it should be incredibly obvious how to convert a 1.33:1 video as well.
I was trying to do this using mencoder and that is a vast insane wasteland of confusion compared to the ffmpeg command-line options.
Unfortunately that ffmpeg command generates errors with high quality video files as the files generated can have “bitrate spikes” where the bitrate goes higher than the dvd player can handle, which stops lot of DVD players from playing the DVD Disc.
