Breaking the Silence: CARE's Approach to FGC
Many communities see FGC as an important part of their heritage and cultural identity, and often believe it to be a religious obligation under Islam or Christianity.
It also plays an important role in a girl's social standing: FGC is seen as ensuring her virginity until marriage, and thus her value as a bride.
FGC was also seen as an ancestral practice, passed down through generations; women in particular saw themselves as custodians of this cultural tradition.

 FGC Education and Networking Project
FGC in a variety of its forms is practiced in Middle Eastern countries (the two Yemens, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Syria, and Southern Algeria).
FGC is a term used to refer to any practice which includes the removal or the alteration of the female genitalia.
FGC is mostly done in unsanitary conditions in which a midwife uses unclean sharp instruments such as razor blades, scissors, kitchen knives, and pieces of glass.

American Humane: FGDM Research -- The Swedish Family Group Conference Study
The model of FGC that was eventually implemented in Sweden closely parallels the model used in the UK: (1) social workers refer families to a FGC and (2) "nonprofessional" coordinators are used.
The most frequent problem that FGC dealt with was the accommodation of the child (57%), followed by how to support the parents in their rearing of the child (61%).
One important reason to the overall low rate of FGCs is that the social workers only invited 35% of the families to run a FGC and that 85% of the invited families refused.

 Female Genital Cutting -- NotJustSkin.org
Type II FGC is the amputation of part or all of the clitoris and scraping away of parts of the labia majora and labia minora.
FGC and MGC typically serve parallel social functions, such as rites of adulthood, preparation for marriage, and responses to myths that the genitals are unclean and cause disease.
Within cultures practicing FGC or MGC, attention is diverted from children's rights to the parent's right to choose, to a collection of medical or hygienic myths, to freedom of religion, or the issue is taboo or simply ignored.

Maximizing Access and Quality (MAQ) - Accelerating the Abandonment of Female Genital Cutting
FGC is a harmful practice that violates international standards for girls’ and women’s rights and often leads to serious health problems (WHO 2000, UNICEF 2005).
Where FGC is part of initiation ceremonies, developing socially acceptable alternatives to cutting can allow girls to celebrate their entry into adulthood without violating their right to safe and healthy sexuality.
Interventions to end FGC must be tailored to target the community’s rationale for circumcision and degree of readiness to question and address the issue.

Those who link activism against FGC to the colonial period consider the term FGM to be evidence of cultural imperialism.
Further, the practicing societies regard circumcision as a beautification process while the campaigns against FGC seek to convince those who practice FGC that it is "mutilation." Calling a woman 'mutilated' insults her and may lead to psychological trauma, particularly for young girls and women living in non-practicing societies.
FGC renders a girl marriageable in societies where a woman's quality of life depends on her status as a wife and a mother, and a respectable woman who qualifies for a good status in her community even if she does not get married.
