FIBA defines the international rules of the game, specifies the equipment and facilities required, regulates the transfer of athletes across countries, and controls the appointment of international referees.
In 1989 FIBA opened the door to Olympic participation by professionals such as players from the NBA in the United States.
Over 200 national federations are now members, organized since 1989 into five zones or "commissions": Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

 USA Basketball: 2002-06 FIBA Commissions
FIBA is divided into five zone (Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania) and USA Basketball is part of the FIBA Americas zone that is comprised of 43 member nations from North, South and Central Americas and the Caribbean.
As the recognized governing body for basketball in the United States by FIBA and the United States Olympic Committee, USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, as well as for some national competitions.
FIBA, the international basketball federation governing all international basketball competitions, is currently comprised of 212 member national basketball federations.

FIBA's offices are located in Geneva, Switzerland and Patrick Baumann was named in 2002 as the FIBA Secretary General.
The word Amateur was dropped in 1989 after the distinction between amateurs and professionals was eliminated, The "A" in FIBA was however left and FIBA is now recognized as standing for International Basketball Federation.

In co-operation with the Lithuania Deaf Sports Federation and with economical contribution from the FIBA, the Deaf International Basketball Federation arranged an International Deaf Youth Basketball Camp in Vilnius, Lithuania 21-26 June 2005.
It is a try to break the isolation of deaf basketball and sports in Africa and to give the deaf people a chance to meet with deaf people from other parts of the world.
Mr Peter Kalae and Mr Juma Kent of Kenya Deaf Sports Federation are the co-ordinators of this arrangement which is given economical support to by the UNEP and also supported economically by the DIBF.
