FIBA is divided into five zone (Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe and Oceania) and USA Basketball is part of the FIBA Americas zone that is comprised of 43 member nations from North, South and Central Americas and the Caribbean.
As the recognized governing body for basketball in the United States by FIBA and the United States Olympic Committee, USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international basketball competitions, as well as for some national competitions.
FIBA, the international basketball federation governing all international basketball competitions, is currently comprised of 212 member national basketball federations.

Puerto Rico are among the nations that will be fighting for one of the four qualifying spots for the 2006 FIBA World Championship in the Tournament of the Americas that will take place from August 24 until September 4 in the Dominican Republic.
And there's no reason, according to Fajardo, why the islanders cannot repeat the performance they produced in the 2003 tournament staged in San Juan where they finished third, a result that allowed them to qualify for the Olympics.
