The FJ-3 Fury was retrofitted in service with a long probe under the port wing for midair refuelling.
Furies were usually refueled from North American AJ-2 Savage tankers.
The Fury was given the honor of the first slot in the new system, although by this time most FJ-3s had been retired from service.

VF-84 Vagabonds, flying the FJ-3 Fury, was established on July 1, 1955, at NAS Oceana.
F-14s were usually paired with F/A-18s, and the unit participated in Operation Phantom Fury in October 2004 to provide aerial support over Falluja for the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and 5000 Iraqi Army soldiers.
The Jolly Rogers have always displayed some of the most recognizable squadron markings in the world: sinister white skull-and-crossbones on all-fl tails, with gold bands wrapped around the tip of the tail fins, and fl bands with gold V's run down the sides of the forward fuselage (these were from the Vagabonds days).

From the 345th FJ-3 on, Furies were equipped to carry the new Sidewinder AAM.
Sidewinder-equipped Furies were designated "FJ-3M", and could carry a missiles on each inboard stores pylon, for a total of two missiles.
One RAF Sabre Mark 4 was used by Bristol Siddeley as a test bed for the Orpheus turbojet.

Daigh spotted 4 aircraft approaching from the northwest at 5,000 ft, and mistook them for P-51s.
The improved FJ-3 Fury was operated from October 1956 until the summer of 1958, when they transitioned once again to the yet more improved FJ-3M Fury.

 VMFA-451 "Warlords" - Squadron History
On 20 October, the "Warlords" craned their Furys on board USS Corregidor (CVE-58), along with the "Death Angels" of VMF-235, to deploy to NAF Atsugi, Japan.
The "Warlords" were on station at the end of the Taiwan Straits crisis and returned with their FJ-4s to El Toro in November 1959 after brief carrier qualifications on board USS Lexington (CVA-16).
On 4 January 1962, the squadron deployed to Atsugi, but instead of being packed aboard a carrier for a 45-day journey, the "Warlords" became the first squadron to make use of the new KC-130 Hercules for air-to-air refuelling as they flew their aircraft to Japan, arriving seven days later.

The mission was associated with an airbourne assult planned for later that day, but the assault was scrubbed when 2 of the 4 US Army Ch-47C Chinooks taking part collided shortly after take off, killing several troops including the assault team commander.
Flying in a strike package that includes 4 Escorpions (2 single seaters and 2 Pave Spike equipped two-seaters), 2 Spanish F-4Gs, 4 French A-4FFs and 4 Canadian CF-4Es, they hit several radar sites (with Martel ARM fired by the Escorpions and Martel ARMs and Shrikes from the F-4Gs) and a C3I bunker (with the AS.30L).
Flying for over 4 hours, and with a refueling from an Cuban KC-130H, they help to force the attacker to retreat, themselves being credited with the destruction of a tank using their Hellfire.

Two prototypes were F-86Es modified with vee-frame arrester hooks, catapult attachment points, and a longer nosewheel leg to raise the angle of attack for carrier takeoffs and landings.
It appears that the Navy gave the new aircraft the designation of "FJ-2 Fury" to imply that it was a logical follow-on to the FJ-1 Fury, not an entirely new naval aircraft, in order to get the program through Congress.
They were flown during some of their tests with an odd modified nose cone that contained instrumentation, and a auxiliary integral fuel tank was fitted under the fuselage in some tests as well.
