TV-FM DX - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term DX is an old telegraph term meaning "long distance." These terms refer to the active search for distant radio or television stations received during unusual tropospheric lower atmospheric weather-related, or E-layer and F2-layer upper atmospheric ionospheric conditions.
The TV-FM DX hobby is somewhat similar in scope to other radio/electronic related hobbies such as amateur radio or short-wave radio, and organizations such as the Worldwide TV-FM DX Association have developed to coordinate and foster the further study, and enjoyment of VHF/UHF television and FM broadcast DX.
In 1958, the FM broadcast radio DX record was set by DXer Gordon Simkin in southern California when he logged a 45 MHz commercial FM station from Korea via trans-Pacific F2 propagation at a distance of 5,000 miles.

FM DX is a term that means "distant reception" over FM.
Virtually all DX reception of digital television occurs by this propagation method (due to most, but not all, DTV stations broadcasting in the UHF band).
DX reception via the ionosphere is variable from one day to the next and is difficult to predict, thus the name sporadic E.

 Intro to FM DX
FM radio is situated in a most ideal portion of the electromagnetic spectrum since it benefits from all types of propagation.
To the DX enthusiast, however, the presence of unusual reception conditions means that many stations not usually heard are coming in, with the attendant opportunity to add new stations to his or her log.
Equipment for FM DX listening need not be elaborate, especially for skip, which occurs primarily during the early and mid-summer, mainly during the day and early evening.

FM repeater DX Some of Australia's repeater site's are found in isolated and lonely places, such as this picture to the left of VK6RTH, Tic Hill, near Perth.
The actual 'DX' is made by the distant station who is able to access the repeater from a remote location, not considered to be in the repeaters general coverage zone.

FM Synthesis - FM & DX synths, Operators & Algorithms, Modulator & Carrier generated Series, Modulation control - Yala ...
Frequency Modulation (FM) is where the output of one oscillator is used to modulate the pitch of another, the oscillators being called Modulator and Carrier respectively.
On DX synthesizers (DX-FM), the only real difference is that the Modulator is a "musically-tuned frequency" (whose frequency is determined by the notes actually played on the keyboard).
FM synthesizers (mainly by Yamaha) underwent 3 stages of evolution.

 Eric's AM/FM/TV DX Site
My primary focus of this web site is DX'ing, whether it be AM, FM, Short Wave, or TV, which, by definition, is the search for and study of long distance radio and television reception.
By nature, it can be quite addictive, and many hours can be spent chasing down elusive signals (only to have the station fade out just as they are about to give their ID!) and once someone is affected by the hobby, it tends to never leave.
I have stopped DX'ing once in a while for a period of time, but as soon as an interesting signal comes in, I find myself instinctively scanning the band, ear to the speaker, to see what else is coming in.

Introduction to West Michigan FM DX
In many places where distance to a specific station or group of stations does not seem to explain a station's frequent reception, it may be a good idea to turn to elevation of the broadcasting antenna in comparison to elevation of the location you are hearing the station.
Since FM transmissions are "line of sight", they do not travel well through anything solid, mountains and hills included.
Because of this, stations from the west (Lake Michigan) have an easy opening to be received and the stations studied here land in the vicinity of Fremont where the higher elevation forces the signals to collide with land.
