Gamasutra - Features - "Video in Games" [01.03.00]
Game players like to play, and choosing which sophomoric one liner to use on the scantily clad, direct-to-video harlot in front of you ain’t playing.
Game players today demand a much higher level of creative and technical competence, and developers need to recognize that the production values of their video need to match (and often exceed) the quality of the rest of the game.
The FMV that bookends most missions achieves its goal: it makes the player feel as though he or she is the lead character in a sweeping B-movie space opera.

However, the FMV quality in these early games was low, and the game play did not live up to the hype, becoming well-known failures in video gaming.
FMV differs from real-time cutscenes in that real-time cutscenes must render the game environment just as in the actual game, whereas FMV is simply a playback of something that was previously recorded, usually rendered by a much more powerful machine.
With games running on more modern hardware, the use of FMV for cutscenes has reduced drastically as similar quality graphics can be produced in the game engine with much less disc space required for the source data.

Perhaps you remember one of the first games that came out for the PSOne was a gem of a game called "Legend of Legaia", featuring a new battle system using D pad commands that could result in combos.
As you progress through the game you will also find "Hyper Arts" (high damaging single character attacks), "Variable Arts" (require two characters to complete for massive damage, high AP cost), and the glorious "Mystic Arts" which you and your origin (magical soul found in mystics) combine for the most massive attacks in the game.
I could not find anything really wrong with the game play, and I was never too aggravated to try to complete a puzzle, and as some are hard, none are overly difficult where you want to throw a controller.
