The FAL was probably the second most common rifle in the world during the Cold war, and like the AK pattern rifles, has enjoyed a relatively recent popularity with the shooting community in the US.
Given that the iron sights on most FALs are of pretty inferior design, installing a scope is not a half bad way to bring the average FAL up to speed, just don't expect it to instantly become a sniper's long range gun because it has a scope.
The Para FAL is one of my personal favorites for portability, but for handling, the better ones seem to have a shorter barrel and the standard fixed butt stock.

You can find nice a FAL for $800 that will do what the 50.63 will except fold.And most any FAL will be easier to sell in the future if you lose interest.

The only reason why the FAL has sold in higher numbers than the G3 is because the FAL came before the G3, the countries who bought automatic rifles in the 60ies rather than in the 50ies seem to have prefered the G3.
link The FAL dominance was because it is a superb rifle; the later G-3 tended to be introduced in contires with Spanish/Portuguese/German connections or patronage.
The alledged "sand problems" with the FAL were extremely minor and the story grew out of the Brit army 1958/9 tests in Libya which has sand like talcum powder which they poured liberally into the working parts.

FN & G-3 still vastly superior to M16 or AK in desert and arid/urban warfare.

I have noticed quite a few postings and I have received a few notes asking about which FAL type receiver is best to use to build one of the currently available kits upon.
A quick note here, since the passage of the crime bill and the enaction of sec.922r it is not currently legal to build a FAL type rifle unless you use a thumbhole type stock.
If you are looking for a HB Fal type rifle for range work this is it, but man oh man does it weigh a ton, actually about 14 pounds on my scale.

If you are going to spend your time and money to build a quality FAL, get yourself a good receiver.

Adopted by the Austrian Army in 1958 the STG58 Is a variant of the FN FAL.
It is interesting to note that while the FAL is not an assault rifle it usually gave as good as it got in combat against the AK-47, its operators putting its accuracy and long range abilities to good use.
