 GNUstep Meeting at Fosdem 2003
Fosdem is the annual Free and Open source Software Developers' European Meeting, and provides a natural framework for GNUstep developers to meet.
The Fosdem organizators have confirmed that we will have a room to hold the meeting; the room will be available from Saturday at 2pm.
The focus of the meeting is more on meeting each other, rather than on formal conferences, but we still plan to organize a small agenda of talks about interesting GNUstep topics, to be held by major developers and contributors.

According to FOSDEM rule no commercial anything of the conference should be, so probably no CD's, too, except for some requests I'm sure (without profit, I'll see).
TV (Feb 24, 2004) Videos are all available (in wmf) on http://82.168.209.239/fosdem the upload speed of the server is good enough for immedeate (unbuffered) viewing of one person at the time, I'll see how that all develops in practice...

This operation was the answer: the FOSDEM organisation was accepting donations, and in exchange was trying to give something back (proportionaly to the amount donated).
At about the same time, the projects meeting at FOSDEM could take place in their respective rooms, where network and beamers also had to be installed.
At 7pm, we had the FOSDEM community support session, during which we were giving away the 2 Sharp Zaurus units (we received as sponsoring) to donators of 200 euros or more.

FOSDEM is a really nice place to meet people involved in various OSS projects and to get answers to a lot of questions.
But I wouldn't want to see us pass over FOSDEM and then having nothing happen in Amsterdam; a meeting in Brussels is worth two in the bush, if you know what I mean.

The atmosphere at the 3rd annual FOSDEM Conference (Free and Open Source Developers’ European Meeting) is pure open source: a vibrant, community-organized and executed event in Brussels, Belgium.
If you think FOSDEM 2003 was fantastique, I'm of the opinion that this year's edition proved even better and Tim, the first keynote speaker, set the ball rolling.
When RMS gives a related talk (he has given the same talk many times and some talks are archived over at http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/) he is clear to differentiate the movement he started (the Free Software movement) from the movement started over a decade later (the Open Source movement).

Yesterday we had our first FOSDEM meeting (so let's call it a kick-off) with a nice BBQ at Jan-Frederik's place (thanks for the hosting, Jan, was very enjoyable :)).
We discussed quite a few issues and ideas to improve the FOSDEM event in 2006 and it sure smells like 2006 will be a really good one ;)
To me, we really need to focus on the event with the same "sizing" as the 2005 edition (not more rooms, not more projects, not more booths) but greatly enhance the quality in terms of organization and make the event a nicer experience to everyone.

Happily, FOSDEM has three tracks this year, so it should be possible to avoid those talks and see something interesting.
This year, FOSDEM is encouraging virtual attendance through the use of a Jabber server with group chat rooms set up to correspond to the actual conference premises.
Some of the FOSDEM staff hanging out in their virtual Jabber community have lamented the lack of publicity for this option, and so I wanted to expose it as best as I could here.

Exact numbers are not available, but at one point during the FOSDEM conference itself there were 1000 people in the two conference rooms.
As a result, the FOSDEM organizers managed to pull off a major event while allowing those with few funds to participate.
I don't think it'd be practical for FOSDEM to be single-track, but perhaps in the future FOSDEM could record all sessions for those who missed it (so we could see them later).

An X Developers HotHouse will be organised on Friday the 24th, the day before FOSDEM 2006 and during the weekend (25th and 26th) X.org will have a DevRoom at FOSDEM.
It is public but doesn't tend to draw the crowds the main FOSDEM talks tend to get.
Cafe De L'Universite is a students cafe 500m east of the FOSDEM site (towards the cemetary) and they offer a good choice of belgian food at good prices, accompanied by a nice selection of belgian beers.
