My first project was to extend the text editor adding commands to manipulate the cursor from the keyboard.
Prior to development of ATK I was for more than a year the principal maintainer and developer of its predecesor, the "base editor", a subroutine package which provided editing tools for text with multiple fonts, multiple sizes, justification, sub- and superscripts, and so on.
Applications used this package instead of writing their own text management routines, and thus the user saw all applications as behaving the same in response to inputs.

The text editors ed and vi, still much-used on Unix systems and elsewhere, have a long history, some bits of which are recounted here.
The QED text editor was first written by Butler Lampson and Peter Deutsch for the Berkeley time-sharing system on the SDS 940; see their paper in C. #12 (December, 1967).
Until that time, text editors could search for a literal string, and substitute for one, but not specify more general strings.

 Using the Intelligent Text File Processor
The I.T.F.P. allows you to import a text (.txt) or Rich Text (.rtf) file and convert that file quickly into the PAIGE XT database and menu entries.
In the lower half of the Database Editor, you'll see the text editor for English and Spanish instructions.
If the I.T.F.P. doesn't highlight the text appropriately, you can do it manually by dragging the mouse over the text you want to save as part of your instruction database.

Well, I understand: you want to insert a tag wherever you place a cursor, both you have a marked text or not, or at the beginning or at the middle or at the end of a message.
Everybody (FF, MSIE users) are allowed to insert tags into the message (also empty tags without a pre-marked text) everywhere they wish (and place the cursor).
Be cool to use the simple enhanced editor (or the basic one if you do not need to select users for the editor) if you use a single text editor, or try it if you are not sure about the reason for the special ones.
