Able to generate interest from the Navy, Dassault built a prototype navalised version, first demonstrated to the service in 1958 and which resulted in an order for 69 fighter aircraft, designated Étendard IVM and 21 reconnaissance versions designated Étendard IVP.

Performance of the Étendard IV was never spectacular, and in the 1970s it was clear that a replacement should be sought.

It's a tangent, but I'd be interested in how FS thinks CLEMENCEAU and FOCH (would both have been available?) would have done a much better job at providing top cover for amphibious landings in a Falklands-esque scenario than HERMES and INVINCIBLE did.
I never thought I'd here FS making this statement, "Crusader were 17 years old aircraft at that time and better than old Mirage 3 of Argentine." Apparently a French Mach 2 fighter is inferior to an American Mach 1.7 one.
