The FTII's television wing was created in the 1970s with the expressly stated purpose of conducting in-service training courses for Doordarshan personnel, and it had little connection with the regular courses of study, being tailored to DD's specific requirements.
The FTII can't be shut down, since everyone on the staff, from the watchman and sweepers to the office clerks and teaching faculty are permanent government employees who cannot simply be asked to pack up and leave.
The FTII's present Director has already declared his plans to alter the "structure and functioning" of the Institute, which include proposals to conduct short-term training courses and to invite commercial film-makers to shoot on campus with the assistance of FTII students.

FTII students then threatened to go on strike and in a meeting convened by the director, an NRI student, who is studying cinematography, insulted Sharan in full public view on December 12, they said.
The FTII subsequently revoked the expulsion and allowed the students to continue their course on the condition that they completed their current and pending work on schedule, while the NRI student was expelled by Sharan on December 13.

For items where the equipment is to be carried out of the FTII premises, the actual time of its utilization would be calculated, from the time it leaves the premises till the time it is returned.

PUNE, MARCH 7: Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is attempting to put its troubled past behind and infuse new life into the institution with a slew of new courses, opening its doors to foreign students, launching FM radio and a television channel and utilising its spare technical capacity to outside producers.
FTII will start four new one year TV courses in addition to the established three year diploma course and these will be self-funded courses.
FTII is also receiving $20,000 from the UNESCO for developmental activities which Mr Matiyani said would be used for updating the institute’s equipment.

As the FTII is situated at a place where Prabhat Film Company earlier was, it will be in the fitness of things that it is named after V. Shantaram, just as the film institute in Calcutta has been named after Satyajit Ray.

FTII students association president Binitesh Baruri told TNN on July 9 that the FTII governing council (GC), which met on March 24, had forwarded the names of two additional candidates to information and broadcasting (IandB) ministry officials without the requisite quorum.
