FTL Games (Faster Than Light) was the video game development division of Software Heaven Inc. FTL created several popular video games in the 1980s and early 1990s.
FTL was founded by Wayne Holder in 1982.
Oids, an arcade game, was one of FTL's minor releases.

The game usually ends with a battle with the major villain, the one whose defeat is the main storyline of the game.
These games are often more colorful and brighter than their western counterparts, and include the Japanese inclination to use a very loose fantasy world, not always strongly based on actual folklore or medieval times (perhaps because of a lack of familiarity thereof), but with arguably more influence from Japanese comics (manga) and cartoons (anime).
Most games use a level-based advancement with little customization involved, with level 1 as the basic level of power in the game and level 99 as the top; but recent games tend to include some customization, like occupations that can be levelled as well.

FTL created several popular video games in the 1980s and early 1990s.
Later, after FTL ceased operations, an updated authorized shareware version of Oids for the Macintosh was developed and released by Kirk Baker.
The game included a number of user interface features that made gameplay particularly enjoyable, from a spell system that seemed to be "logical" to the way the player used the mouse to directly manipulate items in the simulated 3D view.

Before I played this game, every Role Playing Game I had played before was your standard Turn Based Combat, where every character had to wait their turn and you as a player had every chance to sit there and think about what you wanted to do, much in the same way you do in Chess.
As in most games of this genre, the fighting men/women/creatures are an integral part of of your success, especially in the early stages when your spellcasters are weak.
While the game is challenging, it isn't too difficult and even if you find it a little tough, feel free to load up the kiddie dungeon that comes with the game.

This was an expanded version of the game that took advantage of a 64kB runtime (as opposed to 48) and as a result it swapped less to disk, had better game play, and added some new features.
When the game starts there's a number of broken parts that you had to replace before she would fly, let alone fly safely and be able to fight its way out of a bad situation.
The game includes a complete stock system, so as you'd expect the plan was to fly these items from exchanges that were selling to those that were buying, and make coin on the way.

The mouse is used extensively throughout the game: to transfer items between characters quickly and efficiently, to move around (although the keyboard can be used to do this, too), and for combat.
The game is of limited scope (there's only the one dungeon), but the one dungeon is very well done.
Game play is sluggish, and the animation of attacking monsters is choppy, but this game is _far_ better than any other dungeon RPG ever published for the Apple.

At the beginning of each game, all players are randomly assigned positions on the map so each game is different, even if you've used the same map before.

If the game could be considered a failure at all, it would have been from being overshadowed by FTL's other game that was released around the same time: a genre-defining, smash success called Dungeon Master.
For those readers who are fuzzy on their history of computer games, don't worry about it: suffice to say that OIDS borrowed its ideas from some of the the best.
Creating games was as much fun for some people as playing the game, since the editor provided such a wide range of items to work with and put together in various combinations.

Even though the game was made in 1987 for the Atari ST (and a PC port was made two years later) the fanbase is quite big today.
The 3D first person perspective was still rather unheard of in those days, as most games were side- or topview.
If for some reason you want to try the game in a more modern jacket, you can play one of the many clones (some of which have been made using high-tech 3d engines) or the Java version which is an accurate copy of the original, only with better graphics and sound-effects.

He's comparing a game that's being ran on a console that has superiour technical specs and has a whole hell of a lot more horse power that could push a lot more polygons than the Wii.
On top of that, the game is designed to run at higher resolutions meaning there is far more detail in the game.

Above the main action screen is information about each adventurer: name, health/stamina/mana bars, and a pair of hands indicating "action" and "readiness." To the right of the action screen are combat and magic menus, and six arrow-icons, for 90-degree turns and movement in the cardinal directions.
Furthermore, even if I knew all the secrets of the game (which I don't), I wouldn't give them away: There's nothing like the thrill and joy of discovering them for yourself, especially in a program so graphically superb and so eminently playable.
