The calculation of the FTSE 250, and the selection of its constituents (the companies whose shares are included in it) are almost the same as the FTSE 100.
The FTSE 250 is not as widely followed as the FTSE 100 as the companies it covers, although greater in number, only jointly account for about 10% of UK market cap.

The FTSE 250 looks set to outperform the benchmark FTSE 100 for the fourth consecutive year as it soared to a fresh all-time high yesterday.
So far this year, the FTSE 250 is up 16.5pc – more than double the 8pc gain seen in the FTSE 100.
Another solid year would be a welcome sign to investors as it tends to be made up of domestic stocks, whereas the FTSE 100 is dominated by overseas businesses with defensive qualities.

London, 13 July: UK companies outside the FTSE 100 are lagging behind in tackling the impacts of climate on their businesses, according to a study by the CarbonNeutral Company.
Only 40% of firms listed on the FTSE 250 publicly acknowledge climate change as a business issue, compared to 80% of the FTSE 100, according to the study from the UK-based carbon management company.
The FTSE 350, and the hundreds of thousands of companies that make up the industrial base, are responsible for a material proportion of emissions," he added.

Nov. 21 (Bloomberg) -- FTSE 250 companies are increasingly aligning executive salaries to performance due to demands from investors, according to a survey by New Bridge Street Consultants.
The average basic salary for FTSE 250 executives is 420,000 pounds, compared with 730,000 pounds in the FTSE 100, according to the survey.
Sixty percent of a FTSE 250 executive's salary is guaranteed, while the remainder is linked to performance, the survey showed.

The survey of the UK's top 250 public companies, funded by the British Academy, found that almost half of FTSE top 250 firms have a 'hotline' dedicated to the reporting of company concerns, with 31% providing the service internally.
Emmott said FTSE firms should already have policies to deal with issues such as financial irregularities and harassment to protect their reputations.
