Observer | For a bumper year - bet on the big boys
While the index of our biggest companies is up by about 15 per cent since the start of April, the FTSE 250 index of medium-sized companies has jumped by 45 per cent, and the small company index is up more than 50 per cent.
Their rally has left them looking quite expensive compared with the larger index - the historic price-earnings ratio of the FTSE 100 index, for example, is 17.5 times while the 250's is 20.3, and the yield on the FTSE 100 index is also more generous at 3.3 per cent compared with 2.7 per cent.

Possibly the biggest advantage for Antofagasta from being in the FTSE 100 is that its international profile will be raised as more analysts will feel obliged to cover the group.
