FTSE 100 Index - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The index is seen as a barometer of success of the British economy and is the leading share index in Europe.
Related indices are the FTSE 250 Index (which lists the next largest 250 companies), FTSE SmallCap, FTSE Fledgling, the FTSE 350 Index (which is the aggregation of the FTSE 100 and 250), and the FTSE All-Share Index (which aggregates the FTSE 100, FTSE 250 and FTSE SmallCap).
The constituents of the index are determined quarterly; the largest companies in the FTSE 250 Index are promoted if their market capitalisation would place them in the top 90 firms of the FTSE 100 Index.

A new stock market index containing the fashionable technology, media and telecommunications shares is to be launched next week by FTSE International, the company which runs the FTSE 100 index.
The new index, which will be known as FTSE TMT, is to be constructed in such a way that leading telecoms shares such as Vodafone will not be able to dominate it in the same way that they can influence the main FTSE 100 index.
Mark Makepeace, managing director of FTSE International, said the index had been designed to make it easier for unit trusts and other investment products to be launched against it.

The Short View: Value continues to beat growth - Financial Times - MSNBC.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-21)
One of the more dramatic manifestations of this is a boost for the "value" style of investing – emphasising stocks that look cheap relative to their underlying assets or cash flows – against the "growth" style, which emphasises stocks whose earnings are growing more than the average.
The same phenomenon is present in a much more muted form in the UK, with the FTSE 350 Value index gaining 3.3 per cent, against a 2.8 per cent gain for growth.
The disparity is greater in the UK, with growth stocks down 0.4 per cent over the past five years, according to the FTSE 350 Growth index, while the equivalent value index has gained 22.3 per cent.
