Fiber to the premises - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
FTTH, often called FTTP in Japan, was first introduced in 1999, and did not become a large player until 2001.
In 2003-2004, FTTH grew at a remarkable rate, and DSL's growth slowed.
FTTH first started with 10Mbit/s (at end-user rate) passive optical network (PON) by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT), and 100Mbit/s (at end-user rate) with GEPON (Gigabit Ethernet-PON) or broadband PON is major one in 2006.

FTTH allows network providers to leapfrog the capabilities of both the DSL and cable-modem networks and to offer higher speeds at prices that are comparable to the prices of the competing technologies.
FTTH networks in Japan are built either as point-to-point networks or as broadband PON (B-PON) networks based on standards established by the International Telecommunications Union ITU).
Since Japanese FTTH networks are centered on the philosophy that high-speed access drives all business, “tiered” services are not generally offered to FTTH customers – at least not in the sense that the term, is understood in the U.S. Rather, the telephone companies and NCCs offer lower-speed access via DSL and high-speed access via fiber.

The FtTH proved to be an impressive performer, but perhaps owing to its high levels of refinement and resolution, the amp required a longer warm-up period than I am accustomed to.
The FtTH had no issues whatsoever reproducing the high-level techno-strains of Underworld playing "Bruce Lee" off of their Beaucoup Fish release (V2 Records/BMG Distribution 63881-17042-2) one minute, followed the next by the intricate and subdued strains of Joni Mitchell singing "Woodstock" off of her Ladies of the Canyon CD (Reprise 6376-2).
The FtTH was the Amp-1's equal in transparency and immediacy, but went a step further in marrying that transparency with a very natural and human reproduction of timbre, especially in the all-important midrange.

 Accelerating and Simplifying FTTH Installations
While FTTH, commonly recognized as a subset of the access network segment, was acknowledged as a different type of network serving a unique purpose, there was no immediate migration to adapted product sets or different craft procedures to optimize deployment of such networks.
Network architectures for FTTH deployments are increasingly favoring the centralized splitting model, in which feeder fibers from the Central Office or Headend serve as inputs to passive couplers/splitters located within a cabinet or closure in the outside plant network.
We’ll focus on the drop segment of an FTTH network for the scope of this exercise, which corresponds with the portion of the network where the use of optimized solutions results in the greatest value.

Most cable operators, meanwhile, still have very limited interest in FTTH because their existing hybrid fiber/coax networks are robust enough to accommodate the current lineup of digital services as well as newer, more bandwidth-intensive ones such as high-definition television and video-on-demand.
Because FTTH is best set for greenfield environments, "our motivation is for the international marketplace, where infrastructures are not in place," says Tony Stanley, director of advanced access architectures at Scientific-Atlanta's transmission network services group.
Although FTTH is not even close to hitting huge numbers, the sector did have a watershed moment last October when the first trade show dedicated to the technology was held in New Orleans.

When in the late 1980’s the per-subscriber installed cost of FTTH was $3000 in the U.S. and of FTTC at almost half of that, FTTH almost disappeared.
An interesting case on the subject can be found in the USA, where a local telephone company operating in a rural area is conducting a study on the feasibility of using FTTH technology when replacing 30 year old copper cabling to it's customers [2].
And as demand rises in the next 10 to 15 years FTTH is the best and maybe the only technology easy to evolve to provide higher transfer rates like the standardized basic access rate of 155.52 Mbit/sec known as STM-1.

 BROADWEAVE networks
Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) networks are a subset of the broader FTTP category, which includes fiber networks to all premises, both residential and businesses.
FTTH networks do not downgrade or convert fiber to copper at any point from the telephone company to the customer's home.
The real value of FTTH is to create a lifestyle proposition and a differentiator for the community, delivering speeds up to 1,000 times that of DSL or Cable services in contiguous neighborhoods and properties.

Japan: FttH overtakes DSL / Broadband news / News / Home - Scin
While the potential of a FttH business case is still a discussion topic in Europe and the USA, Japan had successfully deployed 2.77 million FttH connections by the end of 2004.
According to the firm's published report, "FTTH market in Japan and its future prospects 2005," the breakdown of Internet access line subscriptions by type of connection, at the end of fiscal year 2004, shows: 13.67 million lines of DSL; 2.77 million of FTTH; 2.96 million of CATV Internet; and 30 thousand of FWA.
According to the report, as Japan's FTTH service market has expanded, the FTTH systems market has consequently grown, as carriers have had to invest more in optical transmission equipment and devices to service growing numbers of customers, and to improve system efficiencies.

TelecomWeb :: FTTH Council Defines 'FTTH'
The Fiber to the Home (FTTH) Councils of Asia Pacific, Europe and North America -- complaining that confusion is setting in because of differing use of various industry terms around the world -- have taken the wraps off a small dictionary they've crafted that defines commonly used industry terms describing access-network terminology.
As an example of the confusion the FTTH Councils hope to end, embedded in their dictionary is some pointed criticism of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for using the term "FTTH" for architectures the FTTH Councils say are not FTTH.
Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH): "Fiber to the Home" is defined as a telecommunications architecture in which a communications path is provided over optical fiber cables extending from the telecommunications operator's switching equipment to (at least) the boundary of the home living space or business office space.

Yano reports on FTTH Fiber Optics Weekly Update - Find Articles
The net monthly increase of FTTH subscriptions is expected to surpass the increase of DSL in early part of 2005.
The rapid expansion of the FTTH market has been mainly driven by tough competition among the FTTH service providers, many offering fee-free services for the first several months of subscription period and free cable work and activation services to lessen customers' burden of initial costs, on top of lowered subscription fees.
As the FTTH (service) market has expanded, the FTTH systems market has consequently grown, since communication carriers have to invest more in optical transmission equipment and devices to service the growing number of customers and to improve the efficiency of their system.

Towards a National Data Grid/Fiber to the Home (NDG/FTTH)
Both a 100-gigabit backbone and FTTH are essential parts of a balanced solution capable of delivering the promised bandwidth end-to-end.
Thus, FTTH would cost $1500 on the average for those who require it as part of a new build and not share any of the existing wires.
Based on the average figures and assuming FTTH technology, this capital cost depreciated over a 30-year period (typical today for facilities of this type) suggests a net cost of only a few hundred dollars per year for providing a high-bandwidth OC3 to OC48 connection to every home.

Speaking Thursday (Jan 26) at the FTTH Council Europe’s annual conference in Vienna, Austria, Reding suggested that such a change could be justified by the urgent need to boost Europe’s overall competitiveness, and in particular create a vibrant market for broadband services.
The commissioner said she was concerned that other leading nations, especially the U.S., Japan, and South Korea, were outstripping Europe both in terms of broadband penetration and data rates.
This inevitably tends to occur in cities at present, although Reding did not elaborate on whether the EU would encourage development of rival FTTH networks, and how the bias towards cities could be ended.
