MRV Communications, Inc. - Fiber to the X   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
FTTX operators face many challenges - regulatory, logistical and physical, when deploying these networks.
Thus FTTX operators must deploy a variety of services - voice, video and data - provide value added services as well, including bandwidth services and, in some cases, content as well (such as video-on-demand or gaming).
FTTX networks, by their very nature, are spread out over a large geographic area.

Acterna Delivers FTTx Test Gear to Major U.S. Service Provider   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The tester offers a 15 second start-up for fast testing; an impressive outside/inside 8.4-inch color screen with views at any angle, even in challenging light conditions such as bright sunlight; and the industry’s strongest combination of ruggedness and portability, weighing 7.7 pounds and resistant to a 3 foot drop.
It is ideally fitted to FTTx deployment, with its easy-to-use one button fault locator mode that can quickly locate breaks in the fiber, automatic traffic detection that does not disrupt service, high-performance testing with a 0.1 second real time mode, four centimeter resolution, and 128,000 acquisition points to precisely locate breaks.
The development of Acterna’s platform of MTS testers is based on the company’s extensive experience in the field, and was designed as the ideal optical network field tester based on input from field technicians, service providers and equipment manufacturers worldwide.

However, the massive deployment implied by FTTx means that many installers and test personnel may have little optical background, and the ease with which test equipment can be applied could be critical.
FTTx is either close to where you live or will be soon.
The available FTTx test tools are deceptively simple in appearance but very advanced in their ease of operation and embedded metrology.

The battle portends similar skirmishes sure to erupt as small- town America becomes impatient with the slow pace at which FTTx is expected to percolate into their neighborhoods.
The way folk down in the Bayou see, the FTTx project is a continuation of a philosophy that was born back in 1897, when the city first decided to install its own municipally owned electric system.
Incumbent cable and phone companies nationwide have opposed so many municipal FTTx projects, mostly using the same set of arguments, that the bulk of their opposition is increasingly predictable.

 Blueprint: Telco Triple Play
Last mile fiber access, aka FTTx, got its foot in the door thanks in large part to growing consumer interest in broadband Internet access and competing service providers wanting to turn the triple-play bundle of voice, video and high-speed Internet services into a home run for the bottom line.
In a just released report by Render, Vanderslice and Associates, they forecast that over one million North American homes are expected to have fiber access by the end of 2004 as the technology's acceptance continues an upward growth trend.
FTTx is delivered using active Ethernet and various passive optical network (PON) technologies.

Light Reading - Test & Measurement - FTTx Takes EXFO out of the Red - Telecom News Analysis
The test system vendor recorded a tiny net profit of $9,000 from sales of $23.1 million, which were up 37 percent year-on-year and up 7 percent sequentially (see EXFO Increases Sales in Q1), figures that were roughly in line with analyst estimates.
The CEO said this, and other FTTx test system business, had given EXFO the leading market share in that particular segment, citing Frost & Sullivan research that put EXFO top of the pile in terms of sales in 2004.
The recent revenue growth is set to continue for the rest of the year, added the CEO, with revenues in the third quarter expected to be between $23 million and $26 million, with earnings falling between a net loss of 2 cents and a net profit of 1 cent per share.

Fiber Optics Weekly Update: FTTx getting cheaper - Market Intelligence - Brief Article
While 2002 proved to be a watershed year for FTTx deployment announcements, equipment costs have confined the scope of those deployments to limited rollouts in rural towns and smaller markets.
In its latest report, FTTx - The Costs, Demand and Market Development of PONs, FTTH and VDSL, The Confluence Research Group points out that current equipment costs are roughly 10-20 percent away from the target per unit costs that will entice volume commitments from companies seriously considering FTTx build-out.
With rural telephone companies, municipalities and utility companies deploying FTTx, revenues from equipment sales in the U.S. market are expected to increase from $79 million (USD) in 2002 to almost $300 million by 2004.

At the same time, most of the exhibitors happily were reporting far more attendees showing up with requests for proposals, albeit in may cases for FTTx projects with no firm start date, than in past years.

Nortel bagged an order from Danish utility EnergiMidt to install a FTTx network that will eventually string fiber to all of the utility’s 162,000 customers in the mid-Jutland region of Denmark, including both residences and businesses.
In an unusual move EnergiMidt is going to have fiber pulled to each home, as rollout of the network progresses, rather than waiting for end users to order service before stringing the fiber from the nearest access point to the home.
In most FTTx installations, the fiber is initially installed only to the curb in order to minimize up-front costs, and then the last link is strung after service is ordered.
