FV Gaul - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The original Formal Inquiry in 1974 concluded that the most likely reason for her loss was that she was capsized by a succession of heavy seas (ie very large waves) and was unable to right herself.
Relatives of the crew were reluctant to accept the inquiry findings because Gaul was one of the most modern ships in the UK fishing fleet, only 18 months old, and in 1975 a TV programme claimed she had been sunk while engaging in espionage.
The report dismissed the notion that Gaul was involved in espionage or that she was in a collision and found that she was not fishing at the time of her loss, meaning no snagging occurred.

The state of the weather, the prognosis that it would remain poor for some time, the inability to fish and the availability of shelter in relatively close proximity, all gives support to the good sense of the proposed course of action and the likelihood that it was implemented.
In the result, we have concluded that it is probable that the Gaul was steering a southerly course from about 1030 on 8 February 1974 and that she was lost some time after 1109 when the last private telegram was sent and before 1630 which was the next skipper's schedule.
We have not forgotten that sister vessels of the Gaul survived this storm.

Science Fair Projects - FV Gaul
An attempted emergency manouver by the officer of the watch (a perfectly logical move to try to turn 'into the sea') catastrophically deprived Gaul of her stability - as floodwater moved around - and buoyancy, causing her to sink very rapidly, stern first.
The report dimissed the notion that Gaul was involved in espionage or that she was in a collision and found that she was not fishing at the time of her loss, meaning no snagging occurred.
In the immediate wake of the report, relatives of the crew said they were not satisfied [1] and the truth was still to be told.

The investigation was conducted with unprecedented thoroughness on behalf of the FV Gaul’s crew, her master and mate, and the Department for Transport (DfT).
The firm conclusion of the RFI was that the probable cause of the loss of the FV Gaul was capsize and rapid sinking, an inevitable result of the possibly unnoticed accumulation of seawater on the factory deck.
In addition, it should be remembered that the FV Gaul and her sister ships were built under Lloyd’s approval, with the same duff and offal chutes design.

The trawler Gaul   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
In essence the inquiry concluded that human error on the part of the crew, shore maintenance staff and the vessel's owners was the cause of the vessel's loss.
In this post, it is suggested that what actually led to loss of the vessel was a design fault in the construction and arrangements of the duff and offal chute openings and their means of closure and this had an adverse effect upon the watertight integrity of the Gaul’s external hull envelope.
Unfortunately, it can be demonstrated that the non-return outer flap arrangement, which was present onboard the Gaul was such that, in certain circumstances, the sea could act directly on the exposed free edge of this outer flap and push it open.

 FV GAUL - Re-opened Formal Investigation 2004
The Hull-based stern trawler F.V. Gaul was lost with all of her 36 crewmembers in very bad weather conditions in Arctic waters, north of Norway, in February 1974.
No distress call was ever received, and apart from a lifebuoy, recovered from the sea in May 1974, a part of one of the Gaul's liferaft containers and part of the plastic cover of the Gaul's boat, both trawled up in 1977, no wreckage was found or positively identified until 1997.
Following the subsequent showing of the documentary on UK television, the Deputy Prime Minister asked the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) whether it was possible to determine the cause of sinking from this new material.

 The Gaul |
The wreck was located in 1997, surveyed in 1998 and 2002; and, in 2004, a formal investigation concluded that the vessel had capsized due to flooding through the duff and offal chutes, which had all been left open by the crew.
Experts visited the FV Kappin in December 2003 and, during discussions, the Kappin’s mate revealed that on the previous voyage, significant amounts of seawater had entered the vessel’s factory space through the aft duff chute opening.
The fact that the chutes were found to be open was deemed to have been due to negligence on the part of the crew and of inadequate maintenance of their means of closure by shore based maintenance staff.

Whilst the purpose of this Inquiry is to try to find out how the Gaul was lost, that loss, first and foremost, was and remains a tragedy for the bereaved families.
I have already mentioned how they have campaigned for the wreck of the Gaul to be investigated and for their questions about the loss of the ship to be answered.
That we are here today is in part a tribute to their determination to find an explanation for a loss which seemed inexplicable.

The VideoRay units provided for the Gaul investigation were based on the standard design manufactured by VideoRay LLC in the USA.
The Gaul survey was the first ever deployment of the 300m LBV design, and unfortunately various operational problems were encountered, but these are being addressed and the vehicle should prove a valuable tool in the future.
