File eXchange Protocol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
File eXchange Protocol (FXP) is a method of data transfer which uses the FTP protocol to transfer data from one remote server to another without routing this data through the client's connection.
The advantage of using FXP over FTP is evident when a high-bandwidth server demands resources from another high-bandwidth server, but only a low-bandwidth client, such as a network administrator working away from location, has the authority to access the resources on both servers.
Although FXP may be classed as it's own "protocol", it is in fact merely an extension of FTP and is specified in RFC 959.

 Info: (yafc) fxp
This is done by setting up a passive mode connection on the source host and using the obtained port for an active connection on the target host.
Examples: fxp --target=2 foo.tar.gz -o bar.tar.gz will transfer the remote file `foo.tar.gz' on the currently active remote server to the remote file `bar.tar.gz' on the remote server specified with the `--target' option (in this case the second open connection).
fxp --target=funet *.tar.gz -o foo will transfer all remote `*.tar.gz' files to a directory named `foo' on the host specified with the `--target' option (in this case 'funet').

I am getting a timeout error, and I have a suspicion that FXP is not allowed on these servers.
I've been told that FXP should work, but the one attempt I had to work with a user on it has failed so far - I just asked a stand-alone question to see if anyone else has managed to get it working, so we'll see what people say.

 What Is FXP?
When transferring files between two remote servers using an FXP client, the maximum transfer speed does not depend on your connection but only on the connection between the two servers, which is usually much faster than your own connection.
Because it is a direct connection you will not be able to see the progress or the transfer speed of the files.
Please consult with the server administrator since most FTP servers do not support FXP, or have FXP disabled due to potential security risks.
