 Aerospaceweb.org Aircraft Museum - F-117 Nighthawk
The Nighthawk's unique shape composed of flat angular panels was dictated by a computer program that computed the intensity of radar waves reflected back to their source.
Representing a major advance in military avaiation technology, the F-117 was the first attempt to build a production aircraft with a radar signature so small as to make it virtually undetectable.
Once a shape had been found with a sufficiently small radar cross-section, it was up to aerodynamicists to find a way to make it fly.

F-117 Nighthawk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nighthawk's designation of F-117 marks it as a fighter, but this is a misnomer; the aircraft is a ground attack aircraft, incapable of air-to-air warfare.
The Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk is the world's first operational aircraft designed to use stealth technology.
About the size of an F-15C Eagle, the single-seat, twin-engine F-117 is powered by two non-afterburning General Electric F404 turbofan engines, and has quadruple-redundant fly-by-wire flight controls.

F-117 Nighthawk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Nighthawk was secret until the late 1980s, and the fighter designation (as well as the continuation of the old numbering scheme that had ended with the F-111) may have been intended to help obfuscate the aircraft's true purpose.
The Nighthawk's black paint (which starting in 2004 is being changed to a more effective two-tone gray camouflage pattern), easily recognizable shape, lack of supersonic speed, and lack of maneuverability would make the aircraft a sitting duck for enemy fighters and surface defenses during the day.
The Nighthawk is classified as a fighter (the "F-" designation), but it was designed primarily as a ground attack aircraft.

Produced at Lockheed's legendary Skunk Works under the direction of the late Ben Rich, the F-117 Nighthawk has profoundly changed tatical air warfare more than any other aircraft in service today.
The Nighthawk has no discernable radar signature, and has the lowest infa-ref profile of any other combat aircraft in service.

F-117 Nighthawk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In fact the USAF considered putting AIM-9 missiles on the F-117 and crews of the aircraft were trained in the use of the missiles but, there is no evidence that AIM-9s have ever been loaded on an F-117.
This is comparable to the earlier F-111, which, despite its F designation, was primarily a tactical bomber/interdictor.
The "F-" designation has never been officially explained.

 F-117A Nighthawk
Nighthawks are large aircraft -- 65 feet long with a 43-foot wing span -- and each F-117A is slightly different from the others.
The Nighthawk's angularity and the need to keep the paint spray nozzles at exactingly precise distances from the aircraft's surface at all times require both accuracy and adaptability to adjust for variabilities from one aircraft to another.
The first Nighthawk to be refurbished with the new coating was done manually by five painters and a masking crew, and took 4 and a half days.

F-19 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When the actual aircraft was publicly revealed in 1988, it was called the F-117 Nighthawk (an odd designation, although Joe Baugher asserts that the first manuals had the meaningless number "F-117" on the cover, and the designation stuck, despite the apparent connection to the old series of fighter numbers).
If the USAF aircraft were renumbered under the Air Force's pre-Unified System, the F-117 comes at the same point in the sequence that F-19 should under the Unified System.
The Testor's model design was later adapted for the GI Joe toyline.
