Functional-morphology of the appendix of the viviparous scorpion, Heterometrus-fulvipes (koch) (Arachnida, Scorpionidae).
Scorpions use external digestion, that is they spit or secrete digestive fluids onto the remains of their prey (which are held in the preoral cavity) and then suck up the resulting soup, using this method they are extremely efficient at digesting their prey.
Scorpions also tend to be long lived for their size, and the females put a lot of effort into raising the young.

 Northrop XP-89 Scorpion
In March of 1949, the name "Scorpion" was officially applied to the XF-89, the suggestion being originally made by ground crews at Edwards who thought that the parked plane with its upward-curving rear fuselage and its high tail looked a lot like the dangerous creature with the deadly stinger in its tail.
The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was one of the primary defenders of North American airspace during the Cold War.
The heavily-modified YF-89 was redesignated YF-89A (Model N-49), and made its first flight on June 27, 1950, and the Scorpion flight test program was resumed.

The Northrop F-89 Scorpion was an early American jet-powered all-weather interceptor.
The Scorpion stemmed from a 1945 U.S. Army Air Force specification for a jet-powered night fighter to replace the P-61 Black Widow.
A total of 1,050 Scorpions of all marks was produced.

These modifications were done to enable the Scorpion to carry the AIR-2A Genie, which allowed the F-89 to become Air Defense Command's first interceptor to carry nuclear weapons.
The Scorpion did have an unusual (for the time) design feature called decelerons, a control surface that could operate in one piece as an aileron or could be split open to serve as a speed break to allow crews to get into firing position behind a target.
Unique wingtip tanks on the F- 89D carried folding-fin aerial rockets in the front half and fuel in the rear half.

With proof positive that the Soviets were developing indigenous jet-powered bombers, the engineers at Northrop embarked on a major redesign of the Scorpion’s armament, fire control system, and powerplants to maintain the F-89’s viability.
Northrop, with an eye on growth potential for the Scorpion, wisely incorporated provisions for an additional pair of pylons under each wing of the last 350 F-89Ds on the assembly line to facilitate carriage of the new Falcon missile if and when the Air Force so decreed.
For this incarnation the Scorpion was fitted with new wingtip pods, each capable of carrying three GAR-1s (or its newly developed infrared-guided counterpart, the GAR-2) mounted on retractable racks fitted into individual bays, plus 21 FFARs arranged annularly in triplets of seven.

 The Scorpion: A Pictorial Report
THE F-89 "Scorpion" was perhaps the most appropriately named fighter aircraft of the 1950s.
It was while the F-89C was entering the operational inventory that two major Scorpion design faults came to light.
With its decidedly radical, upward-swept cruciform tail and its large, missile-and-fuel-bearing wingtip pods, the F-89 bore a striking resemblance to its frightening arachnid namesake.

When I had installed the landing gear and the Scorpion was for the first time to stand on its own legs, I unfortunately noticed that the plane was extremely bent forward - just as if the front gear was too short, or the main gear too long.
By now I noticed that the Scorpion would be a tail sitter because the emphasis was too far in the back.

The Northrop Scorpion came from a USAAF requirement – dated 23 March 1945, for an all-weather interceptor to defend the northern zones of continental America – with particular emphasis on Alaska.
The Scorpion D/J is not well served by the decal makers, for what amounts to over 1000 aircraft and an 18 year history – I only found references to 2 sets in 1/72 scale.
Ground crews thought the aircraft had a threatening look of a Scorpion about to pounce, and the name stuck - officially.

 Convair F-106 Delta Dart
The North American F-86D Sabre, the Northrop F-89 Scorpion, and the Lockheed F-94 Starfire were all subsonic aircraft, and were deemed to have insufficient growth potential to be able to meet this new threat.
The F-106 had its origin in an early-1949 request by the USAF for an advanced interceptor capable of supersonic performance that would surpass the speed and altitude performance of new Soviet intercontinental bombers which intelligence services warned would soon be available.
This project came to be known as the "1954 Interceptor", after the year that new interceptor would supposedly be entering service.

This technique was first used on the F-89 Scorpion and has since been used by Northrop on several aircraft, including the B-2 Spirit.
