A fab is a place where semiconductors - the brains that make electronics work - are made.
Semiconductors are also called “chips.” They are created on layers of metals and chemicals called wafers inside “clean rooms.” TI's 300mm fab, DMOS 6, has a class 100 clean room, which means that there about 100 particles of dust or contaminant per cubic foot of air.
TI's most advanced fab produces semiconductors with dimensions as small as 0.09-micron, or 1000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

This phenomenon is known as compensation, and occurs at the p-n junction (The junction between a p-type semiconductor and an n-type semiconductor) in the vast majority of semiconductor devices.

Intel says that its yield improvement at 65nm is less than two years behind the 90nm generation, that the new Fab 12 in Chandler was matching the development fab’s yields within a few weeks of startup, and that the fab would be at 50% 65nm capacity by early 2006.
By collecting enormous amounts of data throughout the fab, from both processing and metrology tools, the company is able to define potential actions and automate the decision process, for better process control.

After an equipment-related particle event at a fab is identified and confirmed, a process-monitoring phase is initiated to fingerprint the suspect process tool.
Because wafers in one of the fab's process flows require three different implants on this type of system, overall process-line yield was being significantly affected, as illustrated in Figure 8.
The fab's RCA-clean system processes four lots at a time, and the types of defects present on the monitor wafers were found to vary depending on the production lots that were cleaned with them.

RF Micro Devices Inc. (RFMD) is acquiring Filtronic Compound Semiconductors Ltd (FCSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Filtronic PLC, for approximately $25 million (12.5 million pounds) in cash.
In September, RFMD said it is expecting an increase in demand for its compound semiconductor process technologies as a result of "favorable market trends" in the cellular handset and multi-market products segments, and that it planned to add a third fab to its manufacturing facilities and increase production overall.
