Fables of the Reconstruction - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fables of the Reconstruction is the third studio album released by the American band R.E.M. on the I.R.S. Records label, in 1985.
Former drummer Bill Berry was quoted in the early 1990s as saying that Fables of the Reconstruction "sucked", while frontman Michael Stipe considers it home to some of their more important songs, telling producer Joe Boyd that he had grown to love the album.
Upon its release, Fables of the Reconstruction reached #28 in the U.S. (going gold in 1991) and was their best showing yet in the UK, peaking at #35.

An effort at reconstruction, our nation's history shows us, must be implemented not only with determination and might, but also with humility and self-knowledge -- and with an understanding of the experience of defeat that attention to Southern history can give us.

But if the reconstruction industry is stunningly inept at rebuilding, that may be because rebuilding is not its purpose.
According to Guttal: "It's not reconstruction at all - it's about reshaping everything." The stories of corruption and incompetence mask this deeper scandal: the rise of a predatory form of disaster capitalism that uses the desperation created by catastrophe to engage in radical social and economic engineering.
On this front, the reconstruction industry works so efficiently that the privatisations and land grabs are usually locked in before local people know what hit them.

A new report by the Center for Public Integrity attempts to prove something that many people simply assume to be true: that the Bush administration has strongly favored cronies and campaign contributors in awarding reconstruction contracts for Iraq and Afghanistan.
The basic hypothesis of the report is that campaign contributions must have affected the allocation of reconstruction contracts; Halliburton's and Bechtel's large reconstruction contracts and generous support of politicians hint at such a finding.

'Reconstruction of the Fables' is a thoroughly consistent outing by R.E.M. It may seem like a slight update of sixties' folkie albums, but it delivers a solid set of songs that seldom stray from its theme and without losing the sojourners' interest.

For a variety of reasons, the sessions were difficult, and that tension is apparent throughout Fables of the Reconstruction.

Fables of the Reconstruction is about storytelling and trains and the South and music and the whole enterprise is shot through with the feeling that we're lost so badly that we might never never get back.
But the whole album is saved from concept hell by the scratchfunk of "Can't Get There From Here," where Mills' ridiculous falsetto and some out-of-nowhere New Orleans horns bring it all back down to earth.
Everyone's forgotten Fables now, just like they didn't get it then, but it's a wonderful album that set this great band on their brave path.

The result is Fables of the Reconstruction (or possibly Reconstruction of the Fables, since the phrase 'of the' appears twice on the album's cover art), a murky, often melancholy album that's probably the least accessible of their early work.
Years later, drummer Bill Berry would tell Rolling Stone that "Fables sucked," but behind the murk is a rewarding depth and songs that have become essential parts of the R.E.M. canon.
Peter Buck's familiar chiming guitars pervade the album, but are often sent to the background as a foreboding atmospheric element.
