Intimate Strangers review - movie review of the Patrice Leconte film starring Fabrice Luchini
She starts talking about her problems with straight-forward candor and as Luchini's eyes open wider, with a mute expression of both surprise and excitement, we know we are going to be treated with a string of juicy discussions between two actors that only French cinema can produce.
Luchini, a unique and intense presence in French cinema—he was in Eric Rohmer's classics such as The Aviator's Wife & Perceval—, morphs into a boring middle-aged man, but injects his role with enough irony to give the audience a thrill of bemusement.
Luchini and Jean Rochefort's roles are the same, Leconte having switched a con man (Johnny Halliday) for a confused woman in a city environment (Paris) instead of the countryside.

Intimate Strangers (2004) - About the Production
Leconte did not know Fabrice Luchini, but took a chance on the actor who is renowned for his quick wit and much jazzier and verbose mainstream performances.
Luchini was drawn to Leconte's knack for creating fireworks out of the most hidden and private human emotions.
For example, the first encounter between Fabrice and Sandrine takes place at the end of the day, at dusk, but as time goes on they are seen more and more in daylight, until the end of the film.

Fabrice Luchini plays the role of Antoine--he's an incredibly talented actor--usually playing supporting roles which capitalize on his intellectualism.
Luchini's physical plainness reinforces the double standard where he is only interested in women who look like supermodels, so when he meets Henry and finds her "hideous" when we can see that she has an Audrey Hepburn-ism charm, we're prepared.
The title is explained by Luchini as a form of makeup that women used to wear to hide a mole, and since Henry has a mole, at first it seems to suggest her true self will be destroyed by the contact.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: La Discrete | Deseret Morning News Web edition
Luchini is a speechwriter and aspiring novelist, whose best friend, a bookstore owner and small-time publisher (Maurice Garrel) sets him on a male chauvinist quest.
Luchini does so, and as you might expect, finds in Henry a young woman who is completely disarming.
Part of the problem here is that that Luchini's character is too talky and much of that talk is boring.

Before he can clear up the matter, Anna dives in with her concerns about her marriage and her sex life, and William decides discretion is the better part of valor.
By the third meeting, the truth comes out, but the woman is so comfortable with William as a sounding board, she continues to make appointments.
The result is an infatuating low-key pleasure, played out as a largely two-character enterprise by Bonnaire and Luchini, two of France's most talented actors.

SPLICEDwire | "Intimate Strangers" review (2004) Patrice Leconte, Fabrice Luchini, Sandrine Bonnaire
The idea that a woman could wander into a tax accountant's office thinking he was a shrink and the fellow would play along for weeks on end sounds less like a French drama and more like a lowbrow stalker-thriller or a bad Kate Hudson comedy.
But the performances of Sandrine Bonnaire ("East-West") and Fabrice Luchini ("Beaumarchais the Scoundrel") as the very vulnerable, middle-aged, modestly sexy, miserable-housewife patient and her malleable, mild-mannered, dejectedly divorced confidant make it worth soldiering past many obvious doubts (how hard is it to say, "You're in the wrong office"?) to find out what happens.
A pair of psychologically befuddled misfits, they find solace in each other's company and begin affecting each other's lives, sometimes for the better (she gains confidence to confront her husband), sometimes for the worse (he begins hustling his real clients out the door when she turns up unexpectedly).

Spontaneous, poetic and humane, Nevers weds his sweetheart, Blanche (Nebout), who has borne his child, but the jealous, ruthless Gonzague (Luchini), his cousin, literally stabs him in the back.
"The cast is superb, especially Luchini as the smiling backstabber, and Perez as the foppish yet handsome and talented duke...
Fabrice Luchini shines as the evil Gonzague, his commanding, quietly creepy villainy being the perfect foil for Vincent Perez's very Billy Zane-ish turn as the swashbuckling young Duke."

Fans of director Patrice Leconte must love characters who talk, which is fortunate since that's almost all they do in "Intimate Strangers." But how they talk and what they talk about is always a focal point of Leconte's style and the lure, no doubt, for some of France's top talent.
Cast: Sandrine Bonnaire, Fabrice Luchini, Michel Duchaussoy, Anne Brochet, Gilbert Melki, Laurent Gamelon, Hélène Surgère, Urbain Cancelier, Isabelle Petit-Jacques, Véronique Kapoyan, Benoît Pétré, Albert Simono, Alberto Simono, Claude Derepp, Aurore Auteuil, Ludovic Berthillot, Sabrina Brezzo.
As played by Fabrice Luchini ("Coute de la Vie"), he appears to be a small, carefully dressed mouse of a man — "appears" being the operative word.

When his great friend the Duke of Nevers (Vincent Perez) is slain in a dastardly assassination plot by the Count Gonzague (Fabrice Luchini), fencing master Lagadere (Daniel Auteuil) swears he will avenge his death and take care of his beloved orphaned daughter, Avrore (Marie Gillain).
Shades of Scaramouche ensue as they hide out with a group of travelling players, Auteuil working his way into Lucini's confidence by disguising himself as a hunchback (many businessmen used to hire hunchbacks because it was believed lucky to touch their humps or sign contracts on their backs!).
The notions of honour and chivalry and the plotting and scheming which goes with them are woven into the fabric of the story.

Nevers' villainous cousin (Fabrice Luchini) has orchestrated the killing, and is now after the Duke's infant child, Aurore, who is rescued and raised by Legardere.
The years pass and Aurore grows into a ravishing beauty (played by Marie Gillain), who has inherited her father's skill with a sword, and, controversially, developed more than just a daughterly love for her protector.
Like a great old novel (it's adapted from LE BOSSU by Paul Feval) the film grips one's attention firmly from beginning to end, with Auteuil a dashing Fairbanks-esque hero, Luchini a most hissable villain, and Gillain a damsel worth dying for.
