  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Hieronymus Fabricius
Fabricius is best known as the teacher of Harvey, who gives him the entire credit for the discovery of the valves in the veins which meant so much for Harvey's own discovery of the circulation of the blood.
Fabricius succeeded admirably in Greek, Latin, and philosophy.
Fabricius was chosen his successor and a little later became professor of surgery, occupying both chairs for nearly half a century (1562-1609).

David Fabricius (March 9, 1564 - May 7, 1617) was responsible for two major discoveries in the early days of telescopic astronomy.
Fabricius made his first mark on history by discovering the first known periodic variable star (as opposed to cataclysmic variables, such as novas and supernovas), Mira, in August of 1596.
Besides these two discoveries, little else is known about David Fabricius except his unusual manner of death: after denouncing a local goose thief from the pulpit, the accused man struck him in the head with a shovel and killed him.

The Pons Fabricius, one of eight ancient bridges known to have spanned the Tiber river, embodies the typical principles of Roman bridge construction.
The steps used to construct the Pons Fabricius were survey and design, cutting of the stones used in the arch, construction of the abutments, building of the foundations and pier for the intermediate support, fabrication of the arches, and finally, completion of decorative elements.
For the Pons Fabricius, this meant one central pier placed in the middle of the Tiber river, and two abutments situated on the rivers banks.

The Fabricius collection is now the property of the Academy here in Kiel and has been entrusted to my care, and it will be my pleasant duty to give every scientific entomologist all the information that he requires about doubtful species.
Fabricius knew only a relatively small number of Diptera species: in the Systema Antliatorum (Brunsvigae, 1805) he dealt with a total of 1147 species, of which only 474 were non- European, and 55 species need to be deducted from this total, as the list of species described more than once makes clear.
Fabricius was also inaccurate in quoting other authors, especially Linnaeus, and his worst transgression was that he never gave his own description of species that he identified as those of Linnaeus, and sometimes even altered Linnaeus' species diagnosis.

Fabricius' approach was to depict the structure of the body part (here the ostiola), describe their function, and then explain their purpose in terms of the rest of the body.
Fabricius drew an analogy between ostiola and floodgates which hinder water flow in the sluices at a mill.
Since Fabricius had his readers similarly experiment with a ligated arm, this could be the initial stimulus for Harvey's meditation on the quantity of blood ("De venarum ostiolis," p50).
