  Dancing Masters of Renaissance
Fabritio Caroso wrote two treatises on dance of the 16th century.
Caroso's first treatise includes sonnets and madrigals along with all the dances.
It has been remarked by certain writers that, in some cases, Caroso has written his tunes in one key and the lute accompaniments in another.

Renaissance Europe 1300-1600: Dance: Caroso, Fabrizio | Arts Through the Eras: Renaissance Europe 1300-1600
Little is known about the circumstances of Caroso's life, except that he was born in Sermoneta, a small town near Rome, sometime between 1527 and 1535.
In his treatises Caroso dedicates a number of his dances to members of the Caetani and Orsini families, and it is likely that he probably served as the dance instructor in these households for a time.
Caroso is remembered today for two dance manuals he published late in the sixteenth century: The Dancing Master (1581) and The Nobility of Ladies (1600).

Caroso wrote dances primarily for the nobility, and many of his dances are dedicated to prominent Ladies of the time: he wrote Contrapasso itself "in praise of the very magnificent Madonna Felicita Ziletti".
Contrapasso seems to be an exception to the rule, in that Caroso seems to describe a dance for an unspecified number of dancers, calling it a "Balleto for uncertain, of doing it in two".
