Ron Wood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The band's name soon was shortened to simply The Faces.
Though mostly known in the United States as Rod Stewart's former backup band, the Faces were very successful in the UK, for a brief time even rivaling The Rolling Stones in popularity.
They were a popular live act, and their music is recognized today as sharing an ethos with the future punk rock movement.

The Small Faces | View the Music Artists Biography Online | VH1.com
By the end of 1966, the Small Faces had severed their ties with Arden which, in effect, ended their relationship with Decca (though the two sides would argue and debate that point for a while), and in early 1967 moved under the wing of Rolling Stones manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham.
Ironically, although they were always glad to have a hit, the bandmembers weren't entirely pleased with the single's success, because they felt the song didn't represent their true sound, and it was also extremely difficult to play on-stage, owing to its acoustic guitar sound and varied musical textures.
What's more, the band had bigger aspirations than doing more hit singles -- the Beatles' success with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band had set the album up as the new primary medium for musical expression, and they were eager to get to work on a canvas that size.

It was a lie; the band managed to reassure their parents but the incident upset all of them.
The band had now been moving away from their RandB roots towards more psychedelic sounds for some time, but thanks to Arden (the band believed), the music they'd recorded throughout 1966 didn't appear until the delayed second album finally emerged in Summer 1967.
The single reached number two in the British charts but the band continued to resent the fact that their sound was being represented by what they saw as a novelty single.

 The Faces Album Reviews
When Steve Marriott left The Small Faces to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton, the remaining three members hooked up with former Jeff Beck Group alumni Ronnie Wood and Rod Stewart, renaming the band The Faces in deference to their new members height.
But though Rod was the star attraction, a fact that caused the band's dissolution once his solo career started becoming a higher priority than the band, the rest of The Faces were anything but slouches.
Fortunately, the band's music hasn't aged a day since, and these four cds provide a full warts 'n' all portrait of one of the great good time bands of the early '70s.

When Steve Marriott left the Small Faces in 1969, the three remaining members brought in guitarist Ron Wood and lead singer Rod Stewart to complete the lineup and changed their name to the Faces, which was only appropriate since the group now only slightly resembled the mod-pop group of the past.
Instead, the Faces were a rough, sloppy rock and roll band, able to pound out a rocker like "Had Me a Real Good Time," a blues ballad like "Tell Everyone," or a folk number like "Richmond" all in one album.
While they were together, the Faces never sold that many records and were never considered as important as the Stones, yet their music has proven extremely influential over the years.

From 1969 to 1975 the Faces - Rod Stewart, Ian McLagan, Ron Wood, Ronnie Lane, and Kenney Jones - played their loose and joyful blues and soul-inflected rock 'n' roll with reckless abandon, consummate skill, and immeasurable charm.
For those few years they were arguably the greatest band on the planet, and their influence has resonated ever since through the music of countless acts, from the Sex Pistols to The Replacements to The Black Crowes, and on and on.
After the Faces dissolved in 1975, Stewart went on to solo superstardom, Wood to the Stones, Jones to The Who, McLagan to world - class session work and his own recordings, and Lane to acclaimed solo projects before he succumbed to multiple sclerosis in 1997.

The Small Faces - Interview @ Designer Magazine
The question is largely irrelevant in the Small Faces’ native UK where the band racked up half a dozen top ten hits — including ‘Sha La La La Lee’, ‘All or Nothing’ and ‘Lazy Sunday’ - and are staples of oldie radio stations.
In the States, however, the band’s eclectic sound (about which many would add ‘psychedelic’ and ‘vaudevillian’ to McLagan’s adjectives) is less familiar: they made only two minor entries on the Billboard chart with the quasi-novelty ‘Ithcycoo Park’ and the fiery, stylish ‘Tin Soldier’.
As a consequence, neither the band’s gravel-throated vocalist/guitarist Steve Marriott (who died in a fire in 1991) or his songwriting partner and Small Faces bassist Ronnie Lane (a 1997 casualty of MS) ever saw a penny in royalties in their lifetimes from the millions of units the band shifted.
