NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Faceted classification   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
In a faceted classification, subjects are divided into facets (aspects), and class numbers are synthesised from the classifications.
Ranganathan and the Universal Decimal Classification are the two most prominent examples of faceted classification in the physical world, where for many years this approach to classification was thought of as something complicated, difficult to understand and exotic.
Because the facets for one class are compiled independently of another class, this ensures that the terms chosen are specific to that class and are the current terms used by people in the field.

Faceted Browser - SIMILE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
First pioneered by the Flamenco project, 'faceted navigation' gives the users the ability to find items based on more than one dimension, to see breakdowns and projections of the items along different axis, which helps users gather insights about the data they are exploring.
Unfortunately, such 'context dependent faceted navigation' is also the most computationally intensive, due to the fact that the number of possible 'contexts' in the 'faceted navigation' browsing space grows exponentially with the number of items, the number of facets and their values.
To speed up results, faceted browsing engines either cache or precalculate the faceted navigation in the most 'frequently used' contexts (turning the CPU intensive problem into a memory-intensive problem), while the faceted navigation of infrequently used contexts is calculated at runtime by simply counting the values of the search result set.

 Why Faceted Navigation is Hard
I was thinking about the relational model today, and I realized that a lot of people probably don't realize that faceted navigation is an example of an application that simply doesn't fit comfortably in the relational model.
Faceted navigation is built on faceted classification, which is conceptually very simple.
Faceted navigation is based on taking as input a given set of categories, and producing as output all the categories that, if you added them to the input set, would define a smaller, yet non-empty, record set.

Navigation trees can be requested in "full" or "contextualized", this last one meaning that only the nodes going to a certain document are expanded.

That’s because taxonomies are a type of pre-coordinate indexing, meaning that its builder anticipates the compound subjects people can browse along later, like “18th Century French History.” In contrast, faceted navigation is based on post-coordinate indexing, meaning that end-users string together their own compound subjects at search time.

Faceted navigation for information collections is gaining wide acceptance.
However, a considerable impediment to the wider adoption of faceted interfaces is the creation of the faceted hierarchies and the assignments of terms from the hierarchies to the information items.
Faceted navigation has been getting a lot of press, but it is important to understand what facets really are, how facets are different from categories, and how to combine facets and categories to create powerful but easy-to-use information access.

Why Dieselpoint thinks faceted navigation produces faster search
The key to faster searches of enterprise data is the ability to intelligently navigate through information based on the data`s structure and its attributes, says Dieselpoint CEO Chris Cleveland.
In the new version of its software, Dieselpoint Search 3.5, which debuted in April, the company is using faceted metadata, or faceted navigation, which allows end users to drill down through categories to find results, rather than just doing a text search.
For example, an entry into a song lyrics database would contain the full text of the song lyrics, but it could also contain additional faceted metadata, such as the song’s composer, the genre, the creation date, artists who recorded the song, the recording label, the country of origin, and several other self-defining attributes.

NCSU Libraries - NCSU Libraries Unveils Revolutionary, Endeca-Powered Online Catalog News
Endeca's approach to information retrieval mimics the human discovery process by integrating the two most common means of finding information online - searching and browsing - allowing people to continually adapt and hone their search based on their own determination of relevancy.
These dynamic navigation schemes and search refinement options are made possible by the Endeca ProFind™ platform, which takes advantage of all of the relationships in the catalog data and how those relationships themselves relate to each other.
Resembling what librarians call "faceted classification," this data-driven approach reflects the multiple ways any resource can be described, rather than its location in a rigid hierarchy of categories.

This, I think, leads to an interesting property about faceted classification systems in general: it is not the case that faceted classification systems are non-hierarchical, but rather, they actually represent all possible hierarchies that can be built with a given set of facets and facet values.
Each time a user picks a facet value from a facet, they are, in some way, drilling down one level in the hierarchy and excluding the other “branches” of the hierarchy from their search.
The first facet the user picks from is the “top-level” of the hierarchy, the next facet they pick from is the second-level, and so on.
