 | | Briefly stated, facilitation is a process in which an independent and impartial specialist (a "facilitator") assists a group to clarify its objectives and formulate a plan of action by which to meet them. |
 | | In a way, facilitation can be seen as "assisted conferencing," working towards the goals of the group while managing the groups agenda, time frame, personalities, communication styles, and power balance so as to keep the process moving forward. |
 | | As examples, facilitation can be used when there are unspoken tensions within the group, when lines of responsibility are unclear, when staff members seem to be working at cross purposes, or when sales or productivity are falling short of goals. |
