Topic: Facsimile

  facsimile on Encyclopedia.com
Facsimile is used to transmit such materials as documents, telegrams, drawings, pictures taken from satellites, and even entire newspapers.
The surface of the material to be sent is traversed by a light-beam and a photodiode that translates the light and dark areas of the material thus scanned into electric signals for transmission.
Facsimile machines that produce higher-resolution images, or color and gray-scale images are also available.

Fax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The compression method uses a Huffman codebook for run lengths of fl and white runs in a single scanned line, and it also uses the fact that two adjacent scanlines are usually quite similar, saving bandwidth by encoding only the differences.
The codes used for sending facsimiles are: Modified Huffman (MH), Modified READ (MR) (known also as CCITT Group 3 fax encoding or CCITT T.4) and Modified Modified READ (MMR)(known also as CCITT Group 4 fax encoding or CCITT T.6).
An early method for facsimile transmission, the Hellschreiber, was invented in 1929 by Rudolf Hell, a pioneer in mechanical image scanning and transmission.

 RFC 809 (rfc809) - UCL facsimile system
Thus the local facsimile machine could transmit data to the computer quite happily, believing that it was actually talking to a remote facsimile machine on the other end of a telephone wire.
The problem of transmitting a facsimile picture now appeared simple: data was taken from the facsimile machine into the computer, transmitted over the network as if it was normal computer data, and then sent from the computer to the facsimile machine at the remote end.
This is because the the facsimile machine we were using was never intended for use on a computer; it was designed and built for use on telephone lines.

 Facsimile Editions
One is taken on a journey of discovery back to the thirteenth century, for the facsimile brings one almost as close to the original as the patron, scribe and artists were more than 720 years ago.
These include a survey of the historical setting in which the volume was conceived and produced, a thorough examination of the illustrations and illuminations, including their iconography, a detailed description of all 84 groups of texts, a study of its provenance and of the ink, parchment, pigments and binding materials used to create this masterpiece.
The facsimile and commentary volume are presented in an elegant, leather-edged slip-case covered in hand-marbled paper and lined with Fabriano Ingres.

Tag Image File Format (TIFF) - F Profile for Facsimile
Because Group 3 facsimile devices do not necessarily perform error correction on the image data, the quality of a received page must be inferred from the pixel count of decoded scan lines.
In Group 3 facsimile, there are three compression methods which had been standardized as of 1994 and are in common use.
Since this document defines a profile of TIFF for facsimile which is suitable for use with fl and white facsimile image data, applications which use this profile or its minimum subset should set the value of the application parameter to "faxbw".

Color facsimile and Internet facsimile, with their increasing market demand, along with secure fax, are expected to become even more prominent issues in the industry and within the new TR-30.5, which is taking over TR-29's work beginning in 2001.
The transmission method in T.38 may be described as a demodulation/remodulation procedure: The facsimile transmission arrives at the gateway as a digital T.30 data stream modulated by the facsimile modem into an analog signal.
Facsimile is now a mature technology, with only minor improvements, such as the addition of V.92 modulation, expected in the future.

Zvon - RFC 809 [UCL FACSIMILE SYSTEM] - SYSTEM FUNCTIONS
The computerised facsimile system we have developed is composed of an LSI-11 micro-computer running the MOS operating system [14] with two AED62 floppy disk drives [17], a Grinnell colour display [18], a DACOM facsimile machine [16], and a VDU as the system console.
The first goal of our computerised facsimile system is to use a computer network to transmit data between facsimile machines which are geographically separated.
As was mentioned earlier, facsimile machines produce a large amount of data per page due to the way in which the pages are encoded.

Facsimile (Fax) a method of encoding data, transmitting it over the telephone lines or radio broadcast, and receiving hard (text) copy, line drawings, or photographs.
Facsimile then made slow but steady progress through the ‘20s and ‘30s, and in 1934 the Associated Press introduced a wire photo service.
The principle for facsimile transmission over wires was first patented as early as 1843, seven years after the invention of the electric telegraph, by Scottish psychologist Alexander Bain.

 Manuscript Facsimiles
While the standards and expectations for manuscript reproductions -- or facsimiles -- have certainly risen since the nineteenth century, the central goal has remained the same: to facilitate access to manuscripts that are unique in their visual and historical characteristics and are dispersed in libraries throughout the world.
By focusing on facsimiles instead of the manuscripts themselves, this exhibit hopes to highlight the historical development of facsimile technology, as well as the central place of facsimiles in the study of the Middle Ages.
Moreover, the publication of a facsimile usually involves the simultaneous publication of a companion volume bringing together and updating the scholarship on various aspects of the original.
