Factor of safety - Definition, explanation
Factor of safety (FoS), also known as Safety Factor, is a multiplier applied to the calculated maximum load (force, torque, bending moment or a combination) to which a component or assembly will be subjected.
Prime considerations are the accuracy of load and wear estimates, the consequences of failure, and the cost of overengineering the component to achieve that factor of safety.
This low safety factor is why aerospace parts and materials are subject to more stringent testing and quality control.

Safety Factor   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Safety factor is the structural strength divided by the minimum structural strength required.
Generally, the greater the safety factor, the lower the cost of crafting, designing, handling and testing the structure; but, this is a vague relationship which is not modeled in these scripts.
The safety factor is used to calculate the effective tensile.

Factor of safety (FoS), also known as safety factor, is a multiplier applied to the calculated maximum load (force, torque, bending moment or a combination) to which a component or assembly will be subjected.
An appropriate factor of safety is chosen based on several considerations.
Prime considerations are the accuracy of load and wear estimates, the consequences of failure, and the cost of overengineering the component to achieve that factor of safety.

 Factor of safety
Factor of safety, also known as Safety Factor, is a multiplier applied to the calculated maximum stress to which a component will be subjected.
Typically, for components whose failure could result in substantial financial loss, or serious injury or death, a safety factor of at least four (4) is used.
Safety factors are needed to account for imperfections in materials, flaws in assembly, material degradation, and unexpected stresses.

 Factor of safety Summary
Safety factors are used to obtain a safety reserve, a margin between actual conditions and those that would lead to failure.
A safety factor is most commonly expressed as the ratio between a measure of the maximal load not leading to the specified type of failure and a corresponding measure of the applied load.
a 50% Margin of Safety is equivalent to a factor of safety of 1.5.

Safety factor - Information from Reference.com
Factor of safety (FoS) can mean either the fraction of structural capability over that required, or a multiplier applied to the maximum expected load (force, torque, bending moment or a combination) to which a component or assembly will be subjected.
Careful engineers refer to the first sense as a factor of safety, or, to be explicit, a realized factor of safety, and the second sense as a design factor, but usage is inconsistent and confusing, so engineers need to be aware of both.
The factor of safety used in steam boilers is usually between 8 and 10.

 Factors of Safety
The factor of safety also known as Safety Factor, is used to provide a design margin over the theoretical design capacity to allow for uncertainty in the design process.
The selection of the appropriate factor of safety to be used in design of components is essentially a compromise between the associated additional cost and weight and the benefit of increased safety and/or reliability.
The higher factors of safety given above (2.5 to 4) may be used but based on stress levels calculated based on the resulting dissipated energy at impact.

Why mention this, because some people use factor of safety to take short cuts or improperly apply this determine in there reasoning to allow a pressure vessel to operate even though common sense would suggest otherwise.
Factors of Safety are used because no manufacture can guarantee 100% quality.
Putting this in another way, a factor of safety compensate for imperfections in the pressure vessel; therefore, every pressure vessel should be treated the same regardless of the factor of safety.

MWWCORP.COM - Scared by Code: Commentary on the State of Software Engineering
You see, during my mechanical engineering years, when I designed a mechanical part, I would analyze all the stress concentrators (weak points in the design) and build in a factor of safety that was in many cases a simple process of adding a multiplier to the appropriate parts of my equations.
This was magical, since the new equations would output the new dimensions of the part, which subsequently would fortify the part to withstand the stresses to be exerted on it.
This means that when I started programming, I was scared to death because there were no apparent methods to “ensure” or gauge how “safe” my code was, let alone provide me with a factor of safety in case the code was used improperly.
