Factory Records - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Factory Records was a Manchester, England based record label, started in 1978 which featured several prominent musical acts, such as Joy Division, New Order, The Durutti Column, The Happy Mondays, and (briefly) James and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark.
The label employed a unique cataloguing process that saw every album, piece of art or item of property (including their famous nightclub The Haçienda and its resident cat) labelled with 'FAC' and an appropriate number (the nightclub was FAC 51; the cat was FAC 191).
It became a cultural hub of the emerging techno and acid house genres in the late eighties and early nineties.

Factory's genesis was in January 1978, when Tony Wilson, a TV presenter on Granada Television, formed a partnership with Alan Erasmus, an unemployed actor and band manager.
Factory Records was born, with Wilson, Erasmus, Saville and producer Martin Hannett as partners in the enterprise.
Factory, and the Haçienda, became a cultural hub of the emerging techno and acid house genres, and their amalgamation with post-punk guitar music (the "Madchester" scene).

Factory's restricted budget meant that the group were not present for the final mix, and although happy with the sound Hannett achieved, felt he had thinned their cherished 'wall of sound' a little too much, particularly on the flipside, I Wish I Could Speak Your Language.
The strong influence of Factory on the Brussels scene increased tenfold with the establishment of sister labels Factory Benelux and Les Disques du Crepuscule by charismatic journalist Michel Duval.
Released on Crepuscule (rather than Factory Benelux) in June 1982, Swimming still sounds fresh today and belies the fact that it was completed in no more than a week.

 A Factory Night (once again)
The links between Factory and Brussels have always been close: Factory Benelux and Les Disques du Crépuscule, founded by Michel Duval and Annik Honoré, were based in Brussels; Brussels band The Names signed with Factory Records; most Factory Records bands performed in Brussels, at the legendary Plan K.
Among all the bands discovered by Factory Records, those that started the post-punk movement, precursor of cold wave, new wave and gothic, are the most important ones.
It is to this aspect of Factory Records that A Factory Night (once again) is dedicated, a reference to the Factory Nights that were organised in Brussels in 1979-1982.

As their bio later said : "It was overshadowed by Factory's high label profile at the time however, which for genuinely inventive groups such as Section 25, Crispy Ambulance, Minny Pops and the Names proved both a blessing and a curse.
The careers of all four (and many others besides) were dogged by accusations of slavish Joy Division imitation long after each had produced entire albums of unique and original material, and while the charge doubtless helped shift units through 1981 it was to prove the kiss of commercial death a year later.
In 1982 also, they went on a tour with the "Les Disques Du Crépuscule"-label in the Benelux and France (with Tuxedomoon, Marine, Isabelle Antena, Anna Domino...), and had the honor of recording a John Peel-session (together with Marine, who came back from London as "Allez Allez").

Since the Factory bands were so prolific, it was agreed that 'spare' recordings could be released on the Continent via a new label, Factory Benelux.
All carried dual catalogue numbers (FACBN 1-004, 2-005 and 3-006), which in September 1980 resulted in Factory directors Rob Gretton and Tony Wilson insisting that a clear division should be established between Factory Benelux and Les Disques du Crepuscule, the new label planned by Michel and Annik.
Besides Factory, another crucial influence on From Brussels With Love was radio producer and new music composer Wim Mertens, whose book American Minimal Music had just been published by Kahn and Averill.

The track's title may promise titillation, but the song delivers one grotesquerie after another: "I went to the doctor to get a smear/He told me I had gonorrhea." Even stranger is the searing three-minute guitar solo that swallows up the entire back half of the song.
