The students of the University of Ottawa in the faculty of medicine were recently ranked the best in Canada as demonstrated in the national qualifying examinations by the Medical Council of Canada.
The University of Ottawa's department of neurosciences is ranked 1st in Canada, and 2nd in clinical medicine, in citations per paper (highest impact) from 2000-2004 by Science Watch newsletter, published by Thomson Scientific, which uses university science indicators to examine the research of 46 Canadian universities in 21 different scientific fields.
The university is sometimes mistakenly referred to as Ottawa University, which is in fact the name of an unrelated institution in Kansas.

 OHIA - The Wilbert J. Keon Award
A graduate of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Haddad did his undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario, where he received a gold medal for Honours Physiology.
Wilbert Keon, the founding Director General of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, created a nationally and internationally known centre of excellence in diagnostic and patient care, prevention and rehabilitation, education and research.

Furthermore, in selecting students, the Admissions Committee reserves the right to assess, in each applicant's program, the level of difficulty of completed courses and their relevance to future medical studies at the University of Ottawa; the Committee also considers the candidate's results in these courses.

 Blood-filtering Program Saves Lives, Improves Health Outcomes, Ottawa Researchers Find
The OHRI is the research arm of The Ottawa Hospital and a major part of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health Sciences.
A second study led by Dr. Dean Fergusson, a scientist with the OHRI and an epidemiologist with the University of Ottawa Centre for Transfusion Research, involved 515 premature infants weighing less than 1,250 grams (2.8 lbs) who were admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICU) at three Canadian hospitals.
More significantly, leukoreduction was also associated with a substantial reduction of complications of prematurity, including chronic lung injury, inflammation of the bowel, internal bleeding in the head, and retinopathy, or injury to the retinal tissue.

Langer was a former fellow in pediatric surgery at The Hospital for Sick Children and has been on the faculty at McMaster University and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, prior to returning to our Hospital.
Andrew Howard, also a former Hospital for Sick Children fellow, will join the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of Ottawa and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario to replace Dr. Rang.
