H-Net Review: Charley Shively on Facundo and the Construction of Argentine Culture
Facundo and the Construction of Argentine Culture examines the various fates between 1845 and 1945 of Domingo Sarmiento's seminal Facundo and the role the author and the book played in constructing Argentine culture.
Rojas praises Facundo for its attack on tyranny, but "after 1860 we must take it only as a pragmatic truth favoring our culture due to its deep native emotion, to its popular traditions, its Spanish American language and Argentine ideals--all of which it translates in admirable synthesis..." (p.
Certainly she makes a strong case for the way Sarmiento used the text to further his political career, first to achieve power, then to pertuate his ideas and memory after he was gone.

Facundo in the United States: An Unknown Reading
Mary Mann did not begin work on her English version of Facundo until almost twenty years later (Sarmiento's Travels 41-42), and there is some evidence that Sarmiento was not entirely pleased with her complex text, in which his personal history tends to overshadow both Juan Facundo Quiroga and Juan Manuel de Rosas (Goodrich 89-96).
Mayers suggests that this appointment represented a crucial shift in Facundo's career: after his voluntary social de-evolution as a young man, Facundo now willed himself to rise towards "the summit of the steep" of Argentina's chaotic and violent social order, and the first step is his alliance with Aldao.
It might be argued that the impact of "The Gaucho" was limited by Mayers' decision to exclude central elements in Facundo, particularly its theoretical framework and its portrayal of Facundo Quiroga as a precursor of and model for Juan Manuel de Rosas.

Facundo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the book, Juan Facundo is portrayed as wild and untamed in Argentina, in opposition to true progress through the common enlightenment of society.
As caudillos took control and set up authoritarian governments, in the book, questions of what is best for the progress of society were largely ignored by the ruling elite for the more immediate goal of exploiting the masses.
Facundo, when interpreted as a critique of both de Rosas and caudillos at large, introduces an opposition message that promoted an alternative that was more beneficial to society at large.

Juan Facundo Quiroga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Juan Facundo Quiroga (1788 – February 16, 1835) was an Argentine caudillo (charismatic leader) who supported federalism at the time when the country was still in formation.
However, other historians state that there is no proof of that, and that Quiroga's death did not help Rosas at all.
In 1845, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento wrote Facundo, Civilization and Barbarism, a book that reviews the influence of caudillo leaders, which he defines as "barbarism", in the Argentine political and social life, but also as a protest to Rosas' regime, and a call for European education and life style.

His Facundo is a study of the Argentine character, a prescription for the modernization of Latin America, and a protest against the tyranny of the government of Juan Manuel de Rosas (1835-1852).
The book brings nineteenth-century Latin American history to life even as it raises questions still being debated today--questions regarding the "civilized" city versus the "barbaric" countryside, the treatment of indigenous and African populations, and the classically liberal plan of modernization.
Facundo's celebrated and frequently anthologized portraits of the caudillo Juan Facundo Quiroga and other colorful characters give readers an exhilarating sense of Argentine culture in the making.
