Fado is the urban folk music of Portugal that appears to have its roots in the merging of the cultures of the Portuguese underclass (the Fadistas - the "fatalists") with the Portuguese-African ex-slaves who settled in the Mouraria and Alfama districts of Lisbon.
Fado conveys a yearning, a longing for that which could have been or cannot exist and most of its lyrics concern love affairs, jealousy and passion and the lives of the Fadistas.

 A History of the Portuguese Fado
Having said that, and having accepted that I still know very little about the Fado after having read the book, I can really only offer a couple of examples from the CD which appeal to me in terms of the way they sound and for the passion evident in the performances.
The first is Fado da Mouraria by Maria Emelia Ferreira, recorded in 1927 with unknown guitarra (Portuguese guitar) and Viola (Spanish guitar) accompaniment.
She was also among the 'first wave' mentioned above, and I would presume that this approach to the music, which appeals so much to me, did not find favour with the record-buying public, since few of the other tracks exhibit this level of passion.
