		Tatsumiya Island, the mobile and battle-equipped base of the Fafner robots, sends out forces to investigate a similar abandoned island.
		script stays true to the subtitles, but the translators might want to re-check their subs: all the Fafners are numbered in German, and "Achat" and "Hguc" are obviously not German numbers (it's pretty clear that the spoken words are Acht and Fünf).
		Along with the usual language options and previews on this disc is an extensive art gallery, although most of it consists of ordinary publicity images.

		Unfortunately for them, Kazuki boldly decides that saving the life of the Neo U.N. fighter pilot in the area is more important than maintaining secrecy, and he blows the island's cover, setting the stage for a new direction in the story.
		Fafner does have other draws, notably gorgeous music, the promise of unfolding mysteries—who's the floating naked ghost-girl, and what does she want with Kazuki?—and the incredibly high-gloss CGI-assisted animation, which is heavy on swooping, smooth camera motion and sharp-edged extreme clarity.

		Fafner, in my opinion, has beautiful artwork that goes along the lines of S-Cry-Ed and Gundam Seed, and a show that is working on revealing the personalities behind the characters.
		Japan is no longer a place on the Earth, and all of the teens and children don't know about the outside world, due to a the large fabrication the the adults placed up, who are working as a military force to protect the island.
		But like its predicessors, "Fafner"'s story is riddled with mysterious motives, backstabbing secrets, misunderstandings, spiritual/mystical influences, and alot of broken hearted/terrorfied/tormented teens that scream often to vent their frustration and sadness.

	Review - Fafner Volume 02 - Ultimate Sacrifice
		The Mark-ZEX Fafner is available, but only Shoko is ready to pilot it and she is far too sick.

		FAFNER is the name of one of the two dragons (the other one is called FASOLT, a nice name for a OpenVMS-system, too, but in use for another machine :-)) of Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen.
		Over the time, FAFNER got more and more tasks, there was MACRO (as always on RSX-11M+ systems), a FORTRAN compiler, PASCAL, DECUS-C, and lots of programs written by me. So the 4 MB of memory FAFNER had, became to small, its disks were always full - for short: The dragon was on his limits.
		FAFNER was getting slower and its disks became fuller so I was looking for new hardware and found someone selling a VAXstation 3100/38 for 1500 DM (horrible expensive at this time :-)).

	Fafner
		This makes Fafner a nice contrast to a lot of anime that is happy to open with meandering, episodic adventures where one wonders if the characters conspiratorially agreed to ignore any cues that might lead to a plot developing.
		Fafner successfully drip feeds the viewer just enough information to keep them coming back for more while at the same time introducing new mysteries.
		Characters are nicely differentiated with the teenagers distinguished by what appears to be the mass migration of their eyelashes to their cheeks.

		In some ways I’m a little surprised that Fafner got an OVA; it was crying out for one (I wasn’t expecting a prequel, but a sequel would be lovely!), but I really didn’t think it was particularly popular.
		Oh, and Negima actually looked pretty good once the Fafner staff took over the animation duties on it, though its a shame they didn’t fix all of the odd colour pallette choices whilst they were at it.
		It epitomized that nice mixture of tragedy and hope that made Fafner so appealing for me. The tape scene and the ending scenes with Ryo’s dog were what got to me the most.

		Soukyuu no Fafner was probably the best mecha series of last year, although admittedly it didn’t have a lot of competition.
		The animation was generally very good throughout, with decently used CG and smooth 2D, the music was suitably overblown (and the OP and ED were angela’s usual goodness), and the characters were eventually almost all well developed enough for me to care about what happened to them (which was almost invariably something horrible).
		I’m definitely looking to pick Fafner up on DVD whenever it gets licensed, and I hope that, despite the general lack of enthusiasm Fafner seems to have picked up among the fansub community, my inane ramblings about it might spur more people to give it a try.
