Faial Island (also known in English as Fayal) is a Portuguese (The Romance language spoken in Portugal and Brazil) island (A land mass (smaller than a continent) that is surrounded by water) of the Central group (Grupo Central) of the Azores (Islands in the Atlantic Ocean belonging to Portugal).
The island was discovered in the first half of the 15th century (additional info and facts about 15th century).
The island remained prosperous until the eruption of Capelinhos (additional info and facts about Capelinhos) volcano in 1957, leading to emigration to North America (A continent (the third largest) in the western hemisphere connected to South America by the Isthmus of Panama).

Horta consisted of Pico, Faial, Flores, and Corvo, with the capital at Horta on Faial.
The division was quite arbitrary, and didn’t follow the natural island groups, rather reflecting thelocation of each district capital on the three main cities (neither of each on the western group).

In 1418 two of the captains of Prince Henry the Navigator, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, were driven by a storm to an island which they called Porto Santo, or Holy Port, in gratitude for their rescue from the shipwreck.
In 1448, on a small island known as Arguim off the coast of Mauritania an important castle was built, working as a feitoria (a trading post) for commerce with inland Africa thus circumventing the Arabic caravans that crossed the Sahara.
The islands of Azores and Madeira are vulcanic in origin, and in the Azores, one vulcano is still active.
