Fair use - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fair use is a doctrine in United States copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders, such as use for scholarship or review.
Fair use tempers copyright's exclusive rights to serve the purpose of copyright law, which the U.S. Constitution defines as the promotion of "the Progress of Science and useful Arts" (I.1.8).
The fair use defense in trademark law is not precluded by the possibility of confusion, according to the Supreme Court in 2003 (KP Permanent Makeup).

 Starbucks Campaign: Background Information
Fair trade coffee sells for a minimum of $1.29 per pound -- which goes directly to coffee farmers, not to "coyotes," the middlemen who pay farmers usually no more than 35 cents a pound.
Fair trade coffee cooperatives have spread from Guatemala to Indonesia, and the TransFair certification seal is found in 16 European countries as well as Japan and Canada.
Organic fair trade coffee is also on the rise, as farmers are using their increased incomes to cultivate coffee without chemicals.

 Battle of Fair Oaks
Fair Oaks was a small station on the Richmond and York River railroad, about 6 miles east of Richmond.
Sully, with the 1st Minnesota, was the first of Sedgwick's command to reach the field, and without waiting for orders he swung his regiment into line on Couch's right, charged across a field and took position with his right resting on a farm house and his left on the edge of the woods.
At 2 o'clock on the morning of June 1, a council of war was held at Sumner's headquarters, at which it was decided to attack the enemy as soon as the different commands could be properly disposed.

Stanford Copyright & Fair Use - Fair Use
Fair use is a copyright principle based on the belief that the public is entitled to freely use portions of copyrighted materials forpurposes of commentary and criticism.
If it's not a fair use, then you are infringing upon the rights of the copyright owner and may be liable for damages.
To help you get a feel for which uses courts consider to be fair uses and which ones they don't, we provide several examples of fair use lawsuits at the end of this chapter.

DNA tests could link fair, E. coli
Five people who attended the State Fair are suffering E. coli infections that stem from the same genetic strain of bacteria, leading health investigators closer to confirming that a visit to the fair likely led to the outbreak.
A sixth victim who also attended the fair last month in Raleigh got a different strain of the bug, but health officials think the case is still related, health officials said Thursday.
Two patients in Mecklenburg County got sick in early October, before the fair opened, and DNA analysis proved that their illness is not connected to the larger outbreak.

Marginal Revolution: Who benefits from fair trade?
Posted by: UberIcarus at Dec 20, 2005 7:56:59 AM Also I think transitional fair trade agreements are much more beneficial than free trade agreements, especially in light of economic power disparity between two nations, or in the case of infant industries in one nation or another.
Moreover, in some case the "fair trade" shops buy directly from the farmers, thus eliminating middlemen, or use free labor given by volunteers; not all the extra price that is paid to the producers results in a mark up for the customer.
So while fair trade groups may well be contributing to the welfare of some workers, the sustainability of the enterprise depends on preserving that goodwill.

U.S. Copyright Office - Fair Use
One of the more important limitations is the doctrine of “fair use.” Although fair use was not mentioned in the previous copyright law, the doctrine has developed through a substantial number of court decisions over the years.
The distinction between “fair use” and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined.
When it is impracticable to obtain permission, use of copyrighted material should be avoided unless the doctrine of “fair use” would clearly apply to the situation.

How Fair is the Link Popularity Algorithm?
fair is usually a concept based upon selfish individualism and usually fails to put ideas in a proper social context.
Linking may not be fair, but those are the current rules we play by.
However, that theory had many flaws because today’s link popularity algorithm is mainly based on the number of links and not the true quality or authority coming from those links.
