FairTax - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Due to the rebate, the effective tax rate is progressive on consumption and could result in a tax burden of zero or less.
The payroll tax system is regressive on income with no standard deduction or personal exemptions taxing only the first $94,200 from gross wages, and none earned from capital investments or interest.
The Americans For Fair Taxation plan is to first pass the FairTax and then to focus grassroots efforts on HJR 16, sponsored by Congressman Steve King (R-IA), that calls for the repeal of the Sixteenth Amendment.

United States Congressman - John Linder   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
In September 2004, I joined two of my House colleagues in a fundamental tax reform debate in the House chamber that outlined the benefits of fundamental tax reform and the dangers of ignoring the problems that our nation faces precisely because of our current IRS system.
The FairTax offers long-needed tax relief – in the form of lower prices, nearly nonexistent compliance costs, and the ability to choose how much to spend in taxes – to all Americans, while eliminating the income tax and allowing Americans to keep 100 percent of their paycheck.
All the crucial elements are in place: a public that is eager and ready for a fairer tax system, and a Congress willing to seriously consider genuine tax reform.

 Non-Prophet: Fair Tax?
Looking over the plan at the website for Americans for Fair Tax I have a really hard time thinking up reasons why doing away with the tax code entirely in favor a national sales tax is not a good idea.
As long as the tax code is graduated based on income and household make-up I think that this is a fantastic idea.
The Americans For Fair Taxation (fairtax.org) are on a mission to squash out any public criticism of the FairTax plan and are attempting to exploit the federal trademark system for the ADMITTED purpose of being able to shut down anti-FairTax websites during the upcoming elections.

The Fair Tax Fraud - Mises Institute
But like the calls for "fair trade" instead of "free trade," the FairTax is a fraud because it is based on the fallacy that government theft (taxation) should be done in a "fair" manner instead of eliminated altogether.
For years after 2007, "the rate of tax is the combined Federal tax rate percentage." This combined percentage is the total of three things: the general revenue rate (stated to be 14.91 percent); the old-age, survivors and disability insurance rate; and the hospital insurance rate.
The tax reform plan we endorse is revenue neutral, collecting as much federal tax revenue as the current income tax code, including payroll withholding taxes.

 Senator Ron Wyden
Wyden’s bill, the “Fair Flat Tax Act of 2005,” allows every taxpayer to file taxes on a simplified, one-page 1040 form, collapses individual tax brackets from the current six down to three and sets one, flat corporate rate.
A number of individual tax preferences are repealed under the Wyden legislation as well, but those used most by Americans – including home mortgage deductions, child credits, and breaks for charitable contributions, health and education savings – remain, as do protections for the most common investments for retirement.
The Fair Flat Tax Act of 2005 is expected to be referred to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, of which Wyden is a member.

For acting as a tax collector for the federal government, both the states and the businesses that initially collect the national sales tax will be paid one quarter of 1 percent of what they collect.
The FairTax is not a voluntary tax at all.
What is wrong with the federal government's tax code is not that it is too complex, but that it makes possible the almost $3 trillion a year that the federal government spends.

Euphoric Reality - » Fair Tax Blogburst   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Under a flat tax, government revenues would not fluctuate as severely because of changes in the economy as they would with a national sales tax.
But according to a study by American Farm Bureau, #9 in the Fair Tax FAQ, consumption is a more reliable source of revenue anyway.
Additionally, a flat tax better protects poor and low-income Americans because they are not forced to overpay taxes through their daily purchases, and then wait until the end of the month for a rebate check, as many national sales tax plans have proposed.

A national stimulus package would further swell deficits and debt, especially if supposedly temporary tax breaks and other provisions were extended when they were slated to expire.
Tax cuts are not the reason for the lower-than-expected deficit for 2005, in fact one of the leading causes behind the drop is the expiration  of a business tax cut at the end of 2004.
In an attempt to come up with a "compromise" proposal, Senator Kyl has offered an option that lowers the exemption level to $3.5 million for an individual and $7 million for a couple, yet the taxable rate is still tied to the capital gains rate, which is currently 15 per cent.

This tax would be collected in a way which is similar to how the state sales taxes are collected in 45 of the nation's states as of yet.
The author further argues that the tax would make it easier to determine if your elected representatives are acting against you, because the plan would make it much more obvious to see if politicians are calling for increases in taxes or restraint on government spending as time progresses.
The Fair Tax assists "the poor" more than anyone else by providing a "prebate" check each month to cover the tax cost associated with the necessities of life.

Media Matters - Ignoring Bush tax panel's findings, Boortz again misled on "Fair Tax"
Moreover, according to President Bush's Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform, to whom Far Tax proponents submitted their proposal, the actual revenue-neutral rate for the Fair Tax would likely be much higher than the 23 percent tax-inclusive (30 percent tax-exclusive) rate touted by Boortz and Linder.
In their submission to the Panel, proponents of the FairTax claimed that a 30 percent tax exclusive sales tax rate would be sufficient not only to replace the federal income tax, but also to replace all payroll taxes and estate and gift taxes and fund a universal cash grant.
BOORTZ: The Fair Tax was designed -- by the way, this is the first tax reform idea ever completely designed by the private sector, by economists at places like MIT and Harvard, by businessmen, not by politicians.
