Topic: Fair price

  General Information about Fair Trade
Fair Trade means a safe and healthy working environment for artisans, and respect for both the U.N. Convention of the Rights of the Child and the local laws and social norms.
A fair price in the regional or local context is one that has been agreed on through dialogue with and participation of the artisans.
Fair Trade ensures that at the very least 25 to 30 percent of the net profits go back to the artisans themselves, after peripheral costs such as shipping for exports have been factored in.

Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis - fedgazette March 2002 - A fair price for whom?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
In the current farm debate, a fair price implies one that is higher than the prevailing low prices of the past several years, one that allows farmers to cover their costs plus a little something extra for the effort.
When farm prices are high, efficiency gaps become the yawning concerns of economists and policy wonks, because virtually all farmers are whistling to the bank, some with bigger deposits than others.
The 1996 farm law did away with formal price supports and replaced them with a program designed to provide short-term financing to principal crop farmers, so they could pay their bills after harvest but hold onto crops and sell them throughout the year rather than immediately after harvest, when prices are normally low.

Fair Trade and Coffee Prices   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The fair trade system seeks to ensure that producers in third world countries continue to get a fair price their produce.
The price consumers pay for coffee represents so much more than what the producer actually gets that even significant changes in the price of green coffee have relatively minor effects on supermarket prices and virtually none at all in cafes around the world.
This is why fair trade coffee does not cost three times as much as other coffees in the supermarket, even though they sometimes pay triple for the beans.

Fair value - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Absence of one single consistent framework for applying fair value measurements and developing a reliable estimate of a fair value in the absence of quoted prices has created inconsistencies and incomparability.
It notes that the price is an estimate in the absence of an actual exchange.
When fair value is not available due to the lack of an actual transaction, it is logical to use information from an active market.

Cafe Moto - Fair Trade   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The farmer's situation is exacerbated by the fact that the world market price for coffee is extremely volatile, with frequent price drops to farmers when overproduction causes surpluses of coffee.
Fair Trade works to correct these imbalances by guaranteeing a minimum wage for small producers' harvests and by encouraging organic and sustainable cultivation methods.
Fair Trade farmers are provided badly needed credit and assured a minimum price per pound above the current world price for specialty coffee, thereby eliminating the need to sell to exploitative middlemen.

 DETERMINING FAIR PRICE
The final mention of the term “fair price” occurs in Section 108(e) when a library is reproducing either an entire work or a substantial part thereof for a user.
For both Sections 108(c) and (e) determining what constitutes a fair price is left to the judgment of the librarian.
At the same time, librarians should make sure that they are being fair to the publisher which has a right to charge for its products and not have them reproduced by libraries when copies are available for purchase at a fair price.

 About Us
Fair Trade Certified coffee is grown on small, family-run farms.
Farmers receiving a Fair Trade price for their coffee can afford improved healthcare and housing for their families and can keep their kids in school longer, instead of working in the fields.
Receiving a decent price also means farmers can afford materials for the farm, such as a mule to haul the heavy coffee sacks down the mountain (instead of their own backs) and a mechanical de-pulping machine to process the coffee cherries (instead of a slow hand-crank).

Ben & Jerry's - Fair Trade FAQ's   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Coffee ice cream with the Fair Trade Certified label guarantees consumers that the farmers who grew the coffee are 1) paid a fair price for their harvest, 2) members of democratically-organized cooperatives that sell direct to buyers in consuming countries, and 3) have access to affordable credit.
The presence of the Fair Trade certification label means that every step involved in sourcing that coffee was monitored and certified by an independent, third party certification agency—TransFair USA—to ensure the farmers really received a fair price for the coffee.
Fair Trade is a market-based solution to this problem because it lets consumers decide that no matter what the free market price is, they want to see farmers get enough to live on.

Freshwater Website: Water Use (What is a fair price?)
In other words, we should pay a fair price that will recover the full cost of water delivered to the tap, one that is based on actual quantity used.
Even with the price, water would still be the best bargain going, compared with other liquids we consume – and which, unlike water, are not delivered at our taps year-round.
Realistic pricing of water for large-volume agricultural uses such as irrigation would tend to lead to greater efficiency in its use, and therefore to conservation.
