Topic: Fairey Delta 2

Fairey Delta 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fairey Delta 2 (designated Type V within the Fairey organisation) or FD2 was a British supersonic research aircraft produced by the Fairey Aviation Company in response to a specification from the Ministry of Supply for investigation into flight and control at transonic and supersonic speeds.
The FD2 was used as the basis for Fairey's submissions to the Ministry for advanced all weather interceptor designs leading to the Fairey Delta 3 for the F.155 specification, but it never got past the drawing board stage.
The first Delta 2, WG774, was later rebuilt by British Aircraft Corporation (BAC), who had absorbed Fairey, in 1960 as the ogee-ogive wing form aircraft BAC 221.

In 1951 Fairey Delta 1 with its famous delta wing was produced at the Stockport factory.
Fairey Delta 2 (FD 2) first flew in 1954 and in 1956 broke the World Air Speed Record being the first aircraft to exceed 1,000 mph in level flight.
Only two Fairy Deltas were ever built, and the British did not want any further development because of their supersonic bangs, and also because the age of the fighter was considered by the Government to be over.

The experiences from this was used in the development of the more advanced Fairey Delta 2 which was first flown in 1954.
The F.D.2 met all expectations and it was decided that an attempt to exceed the magic speed limit of 1000 miles per hour (446 m/s) would be made.
Today Fairey Delta 2 WG777 resides in the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford and BAC 221 WG774 in the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton.

In 1946, I joined Fairey Aviation as a test pilot and flew many of the company's aircraft, including the Fairey Primer, Fairey Gannet, Fairey Firefly, and the Fairey Rotodyne compound-helicopter and worked for two years on the Fairey Delta 2, a supersonic delta-winged research plane.
In 1959 Fairey Aviation was sold to Westland Aircraft a helicopter manufacturer, which was not my area, I therefore joined Fairey Marine in 1960 and was responsible for development and sales of day-cruisers.

 Fairey Delta 2 (1954)
The Fairey Delta 2 (FD2) was a British research aircraft designed to test flight controls at subsonic and supersonic speeds.
Powered by a Rolls-Royce Avon engine with afterburner, the craft flew numerous missions between 1954 and 1960, at which point it was renamed the BAC 221 and used to test concepts for the civilian Concorde SST, then under development.
Like the eventual Concord, the FD2 had a "droop nose" to improve the pilot's visibility during take-offs and landings.

FD2 undercarriage wasn't as long as the BAC 221's (which was needed because of greater angle of attack for low speeds with the ogee wing I believe) but it was really the very long nose and low canopy both necessary for the high speeds it was intended to achieve.
The wing of the BAC 221 was new (retaining the existing spar structure), as was the air intake trunking, which went from the wing roots to over the wings.
I've also got both in model form. The FD2 is the old Frog kit which is pretty accurate in dimensions and outlines and with a little work a nice model can be made from it.
