Topic: Fairey FD 2

Fairey Delta 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Fairey Delta 2 or FD2 was a British supersonic research aircraft produced in response to a specification from the Ministry of Supply for investigation into flight and control at transonic and supersonic speeds.
The Delta 2 had a very long tapering nose which obscured forward vision during landing, take-off and movement on the ground.
On 10 March 1956, this aircraft broke the World Air Speed Record raising it to 1,132 mph (1820 km/h), an increase of some 300 mph (480 km/h) over the record set in year before by an F-100 Super Sabre, and thus became the first aircraft to exceed 1,000 mph in level flight.

Fairey Gannet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fairey Gannet AS.1 of the Royal Australian Navy.
The Fairey Gannet is a carrier-borne Anti-submarine warfare and Airborne Early Warning aircraft of the immediate post World War II-era developed for the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm.
The Gannet was built in response to the 1945 Admiralty requirement GR.17/45, for which prototypes by Fairey ("Type Q") and Blackburn B-54 / B-88 ("YB.1") were built.

 The British Disease
Fairey had to rent the FD.2 back from the RAF, hire all the measuring equipment from RAE Farnborough and take out accident insurance for the aircraft.
This forced Fairey to re-consider their test programme until the Cazaux airfield near Bordeaux was offered by the French Government.
It was no coincidence that Dassault had their engineers at Cazaux as they, like Fairey, were interested in delta wing fighters and during the FD.2s tests they learnt a lot about the characteristics of supersonic delta wings.

Richard Fairey visited the Curtiss Aircraft Company in the USA during the 1920's, having evaluated the Curtiss aircraft he concluded that the Curtiss D-12 engine and propeller were the principal reason for their great speed.
Fairey tried to make a case for the D-12 in England, urging the services to purchase the American engine and adapt it for fighter use.
Fairey Aviation was a major supplier of aircraft to the RAF and the Fleet Air Arm during World War Two.

The primary advantage of the twin engine /2 version was that it was larger overall, including a much larger weapons bay which could have been used for camera packs, long range stand off missiles, side-looking radar and other such uses.
Meanwhile the first Mk.2 was getting ready to fly, and it was expected to take the world speed records at over Mach 2, surpassing the world speed record of 1,404.19 mph set on May 18, 1958 by a United States Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.
Although almost everything connected to the program was destroyed, the forward fuselage and some sections of the wings and control surfaces of the first Mark 2 Arrow were saved and are on display at the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa.

They were gradually withdrawn from service starting in 1966, and by around 1975 the last had been withdrawn.

Monogram 1/48 F-101B Voodo, by Dimitry Levin
It was designed as a long-range escort fighter with engines cleverly tucked under the fuselage to make room for a whopping 2,340 gallons of internal fuel (3,467 gallons if external tanks are your thing) giving it a 1,900 mile combat radius or a 2,925 mile ferry range.
Voodoo was the first aircraft in USAF inventory capable of exceeding 1,000 mph in level flight and on December 12, 1957, F-101A set a world speed record of 1,207 mph handily beating the previous record-holder Fairey Delta FD.2 by over 70 mph.
When Strategic Air Command lost interest in the escort fighter concept because, like B-17 before it, the new B-52 would be impossible to intercept, the F-101 got a second life as a tactical reconnaissance platform and the interceptor.
