The Firestreak was developed from 1951, its prototype Blue Jay was built by de Havilland to meet a less arduous specification than that which had led to the unsuccessful Fairey Fireflash.
Firestreak had an unusual configuration, with the warhead around the exhaust tube.
Note that this missile was manufactured under a number of different names - Fairey Firestreak, de Havilland Firestreak and Hawker Siddeley Firestreak due to the sequence of acquisition/mergers.

In February 1952, the Ministry of Supply circulated the specification to aircraft firms and invited tenders from Bristol, De Havilland, Fairey, Blackburn and A.V. Roe.
It was fitted with dummy De Havilland Firestreak guided missiles on the wing tips to emphasise its fighter role.
The SR.53 was taken by road to RAE Boscombe Downs, and flew for the first time on 16th May, 1957, also appearing at that year's Farnborough Air Show.

The twin-boom design seemed a logical advance over its ancestors, the Vampire and Venom, both of which were conventional aeroplanes in which the twin booms carried the tail rather than having it fitted to the end of the fuselage, thus permitting a very short and efficient jetpipe.
The RN's N. 14/49 requirement was withdrawn on July 19,1950, and Fairey's project was abandoned.
A new specification, N.114T, was intended to replace it but, as a stop-gap, the RN ordered a navalised de Havilland Venom (Sea Venom) to fill the unacceptable gap between the Sea Hornet and the new programme.

The Fairey Firestreak was the first effective British air-to-air missile.
It was phased out in favor of the superior Hawker Siddeley Red Top from 1964 (Firestreak Mk IV), but remained in limited service until the final retirement of the Lightning in 1988.

A developed version of this aircraft the FD2,of which two versions were built at Faireys Hayes, Middlesex factory, went on to break world speed records flown by Peter Twiss.
The first sweptwing jet to fly over Britain was the de Havilland DH-108, a tailless conversion of the Vampire that made its first flight on May 15, 1946.
It was also the Fleet Air Arm's first swept-wing, all weather aircraft and was a significant advance on the Sea Venom with twice the rate of climb.

The Fairey Rotodyne was envisaged to provide passenger transportation between city centres using the vertical landing and take-off advantages of a helicopter and the speed of a conventional aircraft with a wing.
It was a real interceptor design with two Firestreak tip missiles and a single pilot.
It never was put into production; the program was terminated as the political believe was radically changing into unmanned missiles and not in manned interceptors in 1958.

In 1955, No 6 Joint Services Trials Unit was established at Valley as a lodger unit to undertake trials with the Fairey Fireflash air-to-air guided missile.
Intensive trials of the missile were however conducted with the redesignated No 1 Guided Weapons Development Squadron in 1957 with 10 modified Swift F7s acting as their carriers.
Between January 1959 and May 1962, 99 Firestreaks were fired by the Squadron.

Originally built as a F4 it didn't actually enter RAF service, instead it went Fairey Aviation Limited in June 1956 and used for experimental Fairey Fireflash missiles.
The programme was never got past the development stage and the missile lost out to the DH Firestreak with the RAF.
The jet was then surplus to requirements and was sold back to Hawkers for possible resale in 1958.

Since on completion of the course at Hatfield, I was QFMT (qualified Firestreak missile and Test Equipment) this was a natural posting.
I reached the dizzying heights of Sgt. and was given a "kingdom" comprising five squadrons, and told to use my ingenuity to keep them all out of trouble.
The up side of all this was that they would not allow me to sign for anything, and that through rubbing shoulders with the civvy manufacturer's people and some of the test pilots, I gained an enormous amount of knowledge which was duly recorded and put to good use in these, current, days.
