Fairmount Cemetery is a 150 acre (607,000 m²) Victorian cemetery in the West Ward of Newark, New Jersey in the neighborhood of Fairmount.
Along with Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Fairmount has the graves of Newark’s most eminent turn of the century citizens.
The modern entrance to Fairmount Cemetery is on Central Avenue.

Newark is known historically for having a high African American population, recently, however, it is beginning to divsersify, as Brazilians are beginning to gain a strong presence in the city, partiuarly in the Ironbound neighborhood, causing increase in Newarks both Hispanic and White (depending on what they consider themselves) population.
Newark is the home of Rutgers University (Newark Campus); the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT); Seton Hall University 's School of Law; the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (Newark Campus); and Essex County College.

 Fairmount Cemetery
While recently discussing the Newark cemetery situation with the Volunteers from the Woodland Cemetery I was told that most of the graves in the outside section of Fairmount have had their markers sunk awhile ago to facilitate maintenance.
Fairmount Cemetery was opened and incorporated on February 9, 1855 as a non-sectarian, non-profit organization to serve the community.
To sum it up I would say that all my experiences with Fairmount Cemetery have been as positive as they could be and I would recommend that anyone in the area or passing through that has an ancestor buried there should visit the cemetery.

The first internment in the grounds of Fairmount was that of Lewis Pierson, aged 24 years, who was buried, August 24th, 1855, six months after the charter was obtained, but before the dedication services, which were held in September.

Campbell today announced that a complaint was filed in the Superior Court of New Jersey calling for an immediate shut down of operations at Fairmount Chemical Company, Inc. located in the city of Newark, Essex County.
Fairmount is the only facility in Essex County known to be using hydrazine as part of its facility operations.
In addition to shutting down the facility and requiring Fairmount to submit the requested information on its emissions, the DEP and the Office of the Attorney General seek a permanent injunction to stop facility operations until pre-construction permits and operating certificates are obtained.
