  Fairport Convention : interview
When Fairport Convention tentatively formed in the house of guitarist and vocalist Simon Nicol in 1967, it may have seemed inconceivable to them that in 2005 the band would still be going strong after 38 years of success, tragedy and wonderful music.
They are an institution, holding a special place in the annals of popular music with their innovative fusing of traditional folk music and instruments with a hard-edged rock streak.
But Fairport are a working band, and, as Nicol emphasises more than once, not their own tribute band.

Fairport Convention didn't reach their peak until Dyble was replaced after the first album in 1968 by Sandy Denny, who had previously recorded both as a solo act and with the Strawbs.
Fairport was now not so much a continuous entity as a concept, carried on by musicians dedicated to the electrified British folk style that had been mapped out on Liege and Lief.

The early Fairport Convention were a folk-rock band in the American Byrds / Lovin' Spoonful sense of the term, rather than the sense of the electrified traditional music that they would later come to embody.

A remarkable debut, Fairport Convention (1968) introduced a British folk-rock band whose instrumental prowess and eclectic repertoire qualified them as a nascent supergroup.
