  The Cure
The chilling catharsis of 'Faith' and 'Pornography' still blows through their landscape, and though Smith himself argues against his past every day, he retains it to return to in everything he does.
Even in their most extreme moods, 'A Night Like This', and 'Lullaby' (unthinkable today without its accompanying video), The Cure capture a moment which is too fleeting to feel: unspeakable joy, unimaginable terror, a talent not so much for stating the obvious as being aware that it's obvious to begin with.
There are other moods to The Cure, of course, which are not repeated here, the grinning inanity of the 'Wish' album for example; the cathedral gloom of 'Faith': they perhaps await another compilation.

Smitten with The Cure since his early teens, Robinson had publicly stated that working with the band would be his ultimate achievement, and his determination to make this their best album ever has pushed them to new limits, which is why theyre happy to call this one simply - The Cure.
When the fourth album, 1982s unrelentingly grim Pornography, proved to be the first Cure album to enter the British Top Ten album chart, it was obvious that the rule book and The Cure had nothing in common.
The result is that, although the album includes songs covering a range of musical styles, the emotional intensity of every performance never flags, so that a tuneful pop gem is delivered with the same conviction as a grinding single-riff onslaught.

Faith (The Cure album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Faith is the third album by British alternative rock band The Cure, released in 1981 (see 1981 in music).
Faith is generally a brooding, atmospheric, and sombre album, although it has a flash of anger in the form of the song Doubt, and some edge in the driving single Primary.
Faith was reissued in the UK on April 25, 2005 (26th in the U.S.) as part of Universal Music's Deluxe Edition series.

The Cure - Pornography, Seventeen Seconds and Faith (Remastered) CD Review
Elsewhere on Faith he sings, “Rape me like a child,” then on “Primary” he begins the song with, “The innocence of sleeping children.” References to children aside, this is by no means kids’ stuff.
Faith is a bold and unblinking leap into the abyss, which never lets up, even for a minute.
The sound of these three albums is a tad stripped-down, as Smith had obviously not yet mastered the aural majesty that would later be exemplified by such notable releases as Disintegration.

 HitSession Review: The Cure
I remember hearing "Jumping Someone Else's Train" from their first release, and thinking that the song was cool, but I wasn't really motivated to purchase an album by The Cure for many more years.
Faith is denser sounding, has less dominant melodies, and seems to need a good shot of caffeine.
In an attempt to make Faith a must-have for the true fan, Smith packed on 15 bonus tracks, which are mostly annoying demos of the studio tracks, or mediocre-sounding live tracks.

Faith comes coupled with a ton of home demos of the album tracks, as well as 4 studio out-takes from the sessions, and a group of live tracks, which I can only assume are amazing.
That energy is great to hear in the young Cure, and gives a good reference point for the fact that even with their slowest music, they have always been quite good live.
For those that don't understand the impact that the Cure had on the world of today's music, then this is a great place to begin their collection of material from the seminal band that has influenced just about every modern rock act.

As legend has it, Robert Smith was disappointed with parts of their debut and before that album was even released, had a clear idea of the direction he wanted their second album to go in.
The album is still impressive; more for the sheer brazen attitude the band must have had to complete this album.
Using both, a new recording studio and producer, the album is a visceral assault upon the senses: the pounding, tribal drumming, Robert Smith’s more confident vocal wailing and their use of dissonant flourishes.

For Cure leader and lyricist Robert Smith, the comfort of religion crumbles away in the face of this harsh life, leaving him with "nothing left but faith." The period during which FAITH was made was one of the darkest in Smith's life.
I know FAITH is the favorite Cure album of a few certain fans, although it's not their strongest one in my view.
FAITH is a four-star recording, but the latest repackaging of this fine album adds a bonus disc of largely forgettable material, and for this I feel I must subtract a star from the overall rating.

Although the album as a whole is uncharacteristically upbeat, lines like “but I’m still not sure what’s going on, and I can’t help feeling something’s wrong” and “I’m sick of it all” show that Smith hasn’t quite mastered this happiness thing just yet, which is generally a good thing where his music is concerned.
First of all, despite their singles knack, The Cure have always been album oriented artists, and each of their albums from this period have distinct characteristics that are lost when simply sampled from.

Music Spectrum: English Dance Rock: The Cure's Faith [Remastered]
If the Cure couldn’t cross those boundaries, a shy, sheltered, white, Christian kid from the Midwest wouldn’t have been able to find such a vast connection with this music that hinted at a dark world of funeral, scorned love, experimenting, freedom, streets, England, sex, and men wearing makeup.
The sixth track on Faith is “Doubt,” part of the section of the album that reimagines the drama laid out in “Primary” and “Other Voices.” The “Rarities” disc finds Robert Smith at home with drum machine and guitar producing an early demo of “Doubt,” laying out a guitar funeral march.
Go back to the album version, the same guitar march is double-timed, a frantic run alongside the hearse as it peels out and races towards the dead end street.

Faith, As I see it, is the point where "goth" rock lost all of its Violence and Raw agression,(I.E Joy Division, Bauhaus, etc.) and became something of a more, well, lyrically stimulating and Musically haunting genre.
The Cure had progressed from post-punk masters to Goth Rock visionaries, and the visions represented here, as mentioned in the title of the record, are of the abscence, or loss of faith.

One of modern rock's most enduring acts, the Cure proves it's still able to put on a great live show in THE CURE FESTIVAL 2005.
Led by depressive pop prince Robert Smith, the Cure have taken their legions of fans on a journey from post-punk to gothic to new wave to art rock, stopping only for refills of hairspray along the way.
An amazing band both live and in the studio, the Cure may have shifted its lineup numerous times, but Smith has remained a consistently fascinating rock icon throughout the changes.

Certainly not the "darkest" the Cure would eventually get, Faith is, as represented by the cover art, one of the most "gray" records out there.
Melancholy and despondent (the feel of funerals and old churches just oozes from this record) without the anger that would over take Pornography, Faith comes off as not just a collection of songs, but as a full piece.
But it's not all gloomy keyboards and minimalist percussion, Faith is also a milestone for Robert Smith lyrically, branching out into questions of faith and spirituality he never quite touched on so well ever again.

I'm not a fan of the cure, but some of their songs do stand out and highlight some of the poignant moment in my life, so greatest hits was ideal for me, especially as it has lovecats on it...
But this album seems to be lacking something, it sounds almost as if all their greatest hits have been RE-Recorded for this album.
