 George Michael biography
Michael began work on his first solo album, but if he was out to cultivate a grown-up image as a songwriter and singer, his first single proved a serious error of judgement: with its facile lyric (and ludicrous 'Huuaargh, sex!' background vocals), "I Want Your Sex" had all the sensuous subtlety of a giggling schoolboy.
Faith may have attracted precious metal like a magnet, but as a decade of virtually unparalleled success drew to a close, the increasingly private Michael felt dissatisfied with the pressures and trappings of stardom.
George Michael's conviction in the US for what's known as 'cottaging' in the UK forced him to state publicly that he was gay - an old story that had been circulating in the music industry since his time with Wham (with Boy George's biography Take It Like A Man being particularly scathing).

Almost immediately after he became an international superstar with 1987's Faith, George Michael developed a complex that he was not taken seriously as an artist.
Michael took six years to deliver Older, a delay that was initially blamed on a vicious battle with his record company, Sony, but its own successor, Patience, didn't appear for another eight years, a time which not only had no spats with the label but also saw him re-signing to Sony.
That's unfortunate because the core of the album is quite good: it's hard not to admire his studiocraft, there's a starkly confessional streak in his writing that's disarmingly direct, and, as an album, it balances the moody ballads and sleek neo-disco better than Older, feeling much brighter than that claustrophobic affair.

The album's fifth single, the almost ridiculously catchy "Monkey" (#1 Pop, #6 R&B, #1 Dance), is similar in spirit, and somehow succeeds at the nearly impossible task of incorporating a meaningful analogy (in this case, the pain of being in love with someone who is a drug addict) into a irresistibly silly pop ditty.
