 Odyssey Channel now Hallmark Channel
The Hallmark Channel launches today with the six-hour miniseries "The Infinite Worlds of H.G. Wells" (9 tonight, tomorrow and Tuesday), which includes the dramatization of six short stories written by Wells, largely regarded as the father of science fiction ("The Island of Dr. Moreau," "The Invisible Man," "War of the Worlds").
Some programs produced by the Henson company, which still owns a part of the network, will disappear from the Hallmark airwaves for a while, but they will return for a Christmas marathon and be back on more regularly next year.
The National Interfaith Cable Coalition, which initially started the network that has become Hallmark, still has an ownership stake in the channel, but they've agreed to reduce the number of hours of religious-themed programming from 30 hours a week to 14 1/2 hours, mostly on Sunday.

The daily Mass from St. Ann's Shrine in Scranton, Pa., is one of the highest-rated daily shows on the national cable network Odyssey, formerly the Faith and Values Channel.
While the church would prefer people in the pews, and the new document said the televised Mass should never be a substitute for pastoral visits to the sick and housebound, the proposed guidelines say the Mass can be a source of comfort to people unable to attend church and a way to evangelize inactive members.
If the Mass is taped, only one service should be recorded a day and viewers should be notified when the Mass is pre-recorded, the bishops said.

NEW YORK (CWN) - The Faith & Values Channel announced on Tuesday that the Christian network is getting a new name and a new look this fall.
The cable channel, owned by a consortium of 64 Protestant, Jewish, Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox groups, will become the Odyssey Channel on September 29 in order to attract the broadest audience possible.
"In addition to new programs, the network will also begin a channel promotion campaign to fully explain our offerings." The cable channel's offerings include a varied fare, including religious quiz shows, cooking shows, and family dramas.
