Gillett (1985) suggested that the introduction of diving goggles to Fakaofo in the 1940s was the main factor contributing to the demise of the pearl oyster population today.
Fakaofo has abundant coral patch reefs, bommies, pinnacles and a ‘lagoon within the lagoon’ at the southern end of the atoll where the pearl oysters could be held.
Foremost in Fakaofo lagoon is the high densities of spondylid oysters which would be stubborn competitors of an attempt to establish pearl oysters.

Tokelau consists of three isolated atolls of the South Pacific located 480 km north from the islands of the Samoan archipelago and 440 km directly south from the Rawaki Islands of the central Pacific.
From Atafu in the north to Fakaofo in the south, the atolls are spread over just under 200 km of ocean (see panoramic image, orientated in a northwest to southeast running chain.
Swains Island, located 177 km southwards from Fakaofo is claimed, for historical and geographical reasons, as part of Tokelau; although it is currently considered as part of American Samoa.

The atolls' already-minuscule populations were drastically reduced to a mere 200 in the 1850s and 60s when Peruvian slave traders seized around 250 people, 500 islanders were removed by missionaries, and diseases such as dysentery took hold.
The religious distribution amongst the atolls reflects the staggered arrival of Samoan missionaries in the 19th century: Atafu is almost completely Protestant; Nukunonu is largely Catholic; and Fakaofo is split between the two faiths, due to the simultaneous arrival of Catholic and Protestant missionaries.
As with all coral atolls, the soil is thin, infertile and poorly drained.
